Elementary teachers are being challenged to teach literacy to second language learners. In order to best serve ELL's, teachers must understand how these students acquire English and how to meet their varying literacy needs in the classroom. This project describes best practices in teaching guided reading to ELL's. The study will describe the implementation of the ELL guided reading program and how instruction was informed by knowledge of language learning.

Given the present demands for teacher accountability, it is imperative that teacher preparation programs prepare teachers by developing their ability to reflect deeply about their practices and to seek better approaches in instruction. Action research offers a possible means of promoting critical reflectivity prior to graduation. However, undergraduates have not yet been exposed to the ways of research to make their inquiries systematic and their conclusions reliable and valid. This study explores how Latino first grade students develop mathematical problem solving and communication in their native language. Problem types came from Cognitively Guided Instruction (Carpenter et al. 1999) and were embedded in students’ cultural and linguisticexperiences. Findings show students solved a wide range of CGI problems and developed confidence, flexibility, and sophistication in their strategies and explanations.

This study examined traditional reading instruction and concept mapping reading instruction using reading and survey data collected from English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in China. Its purpose was to investigate whether there was any difference between these instructional types in three reading areas: main idea reading, subordinate idea reading and reading between the lines. Forty first-year students were randomly chosen from two universities in Southwestern China. They were equally divided into the two instructional methods. This article describes an innovative professional development model that uses on-site Teaching/Learning Centers in which teachers work and collaborate with other teachers to learn about effective methods of literacy instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse students. This model fosters collaborative, sustained, on-site, and practical development in which teachers plan, model, observe, discuss, and reflect together as they transform their practice.

This study examines the outcomes of a two-part service learning project in a summer practicum for English as Second Language (ESL) teacher endorsement candidates. First, 10 mainstream K12 teachers with 2 to 30 years' experience needed practice teaching students with linguistic and cultural differences. Their own service learning was to implement a summer family literacy program for ESL students. Second, these teachers had planned a service learning component for the ESL students. Teachers, feeling obliged to correct all the perceived linguistic deficits in students, went into a panic that they described as "emergency room mode." Regarding service learning and any …

Educational institutions developed in Tucson, Arizona in the last quarter of the 19th Century during a critical time in cultural and political shifts of power between Anglo and Mexican elites in Southern Arizona. This paper examines unofficial language policies in both public and parochial schools in Tucson that reflect the accommodation of power between the two groups. The data used to reconstruct these de facto language policies comes from school documents, newspaper articles and advertisements, memoirs of teachers, politicians and others as well as historical accounts of the formation of Tucson’s first schools. This study investigated the factors that impact the decisions to integrate the World Wide Web into foreign language curriculum. This inquiry involved a combined approach -- including a survey and a case study. The current status of the technology application in foreign language instruction at a state university in the United States was assessed through the survey. It revealed that integrating the Web was the least immediate concern of most foreign language professors due to their limited knowledge, their inadequate training, and their ambiguous attitudes. Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.
