Fear, Estrangement And The Sublime Moment In Hugo Santiago’S Invasión (Argentina, 1969)., Yvonne F. Cornejo

This paper examines how the sublime aesthetic combines with science fiction tropes to articulate estrangement and dislocation in Hugo Santiago’s film Invasión (Argentina, 1969). The dystopian tones, alienating landscape and unstoppable invaders featured in the film resonate with Burke’s negative sublime, while a Kantian approach to Invasión provides grounds for discussion of the film’s cognitive effect on the viewer. A close examination of the cinematic text reveals the manner in which its dystopian tropes cross over into the horror genre to comment on politics and history, while also highlighting the limits of representation.

No individual has had greater impact on Argentine history than Juan Domingo Perón. The years 1943–1945, when he was an influential member in his nation’s governing junta, and 1946–1955, when he was its president, were tumultuous ones that transformed Argentina. Perón was a highly controversial figure, and his memory continues to provoke intense and often acrimonious debate. Moreover, the nature of his legacy resists neat classification. Many of his achievements were positive. He oversaw the passage of progressive social legislation, including women’s suffrage and prison reform, and he implemented programs that aided the nation’s poor and working classes. On the …

This dissertation is a case study of agrarian transformation in an agro-export society, Argentina. I study the process of adoption of the technological package of genetically modified (GM) soy in the Argentine countryside, its socio-ecological consequences, and Argentines' responses to it. In particular, this research addresses Argentina's unique situation of being a developing country that has positively embraced the biotechnology of GM seeds as a key accumulation strategy without the emergence of major contestation against GM soy monocropping. As an indisputable central element of Argentine popular culture, the tango constitutes much more than an artistic expression or a recreational activity. It is the manifestation of a collective ideology and idiosyncrasy. This paper analyzes the relationship that La gran aldea (1884) proposes between the lower-middle classes and the Argentinean process of modernization in order to criticize the lack of progress due to socio-economic factors. The author, a member of the Generation of 1880, shows this criticism in the text in aspects such as education, the mix of social classes, family disintegration, the contrast between Buenos Aires in 1862 and 1882, immigration and the deficient role that the upper classes played in the development of a strong national industry and economy.

This dissertation has three parts. First, I explore the ways in which word intersects with image in several recent texts by the contemporary Argentine writer Sergio Chejfec, whose oeuvre is replete with verbal descriptions of visual artifacts. Second, as a complement to the critical essay, I present my English translation of Chejfec's Baroni: un viaje (2007), a novel featuring the Venezuelan artist Rafaela Baroni, whose extraordinary wood carvings of Virgins, saints and other figures are described in key passages. The National Imagination explores the concept of a national community as constructed and critiqued through literary and cinematic narratives, as well as other cultural texts.

Our underlying premise is that national languages and cultures promote the identity of particular communities. We are interested in examining those subjective expressions of culture—images, symbols, narratives—that lead people to feel that they are members of the communities we call nations.
