By mapping epistemological, pedagogical, and feminist frameworks, this study pursues a reading of Elena Poniatowska’s cultural essay on Nahui Olin, to focus on auto/bio/graphical subjects, gender, ideology, and representation within diverse theoretical approaches and discursive explorations. This study is applied to an undergraduate, multidisciplinary seminar in Hispanic Studies and reading practices, dismantling canonical life-writing models of female representation.

This article offers a reflection on poetics and the stylistic analysis of the degree of complexity involved in discerning the meaning of a poem in terms of form and content, and the objective or subjective nature of traditional poetic genres. The expressed thesis is bound to the idea of ambiguity, to the hermeticism, or radical composition of contemporary poetry that has rendered the reader a co-responsible agent in the text’s consumption. Nevertheless, as something beyond multiple readings that allow for abstraction and imagined meanings, poetry is made up of words that, strictly speaking, have no room for error.

A study of contemporary Indigenous-language poetry in Mexico, with a special focus on four female poets from Oaxaca and Chiapas, whose work is reaching international audiences: Irma Pineda (Isthmus Zapotec), Enriqueta Lunez (Tzotzil), Mikeas Sánchez (Zoque) and Celerina Patricia Sánchez Santiago (Mixtec). Assessment of a movement toward greater production and changing attitudes about Indigenous-language poets and their work in Mexico during the past decade, and how their advocacy has led to wider publishing opportunities and broader readership, as well as cultural and linguistic preservation.

In Elena Poniatowska’s novel, Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela, readers detect a connection to the historical context of Paris during the early twentieth century and the relationship of Diego Rivera with Angelina Beloff. Since it is known that Poniatowska created this fictional account after having read Bertram Wolfe’s biography of Diego Rivera, this study focuses on the actual, physical letters in the archives, consulted by Wolfe, to reflect on evidence and recreation, to posit that different narratives emerge when each source is studied separately, and that our comprehension of biography and fiction can be altered after reviewing these historical documents. …

In this reading of Elena Poniatowska’s Paseo de la Reforma, the plot goes beyond a love story and personal transformation of the protagonist to represent a metaphor in microcosm for Mexico City. Although a shorter work than her more highly recognized novels and testimonies, the tensions between social classes and the unearned privileges of the elite in this novel stand in contrast to the suffering of the masses.

The Canal, a vibrant community of Latino immigrant families, is rich in diversity and cultural traditions, strong family networks, and a determination towards economic selfsufficiency. Latino immigrants in Marin County are heavily concentrated in the Canal and have the highest labor force participation rates in the County.i Despite being a vital part of Marin’s social, economic, and cultural society, Canal residents continue to struggle to meet basic necessities for their families.

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

Cruise ship tourism is a dynamic site of inquiry within the anthropology of tourism. Its history and current social manifestations concerns millions of localities around the globe that combine to form a transnational entity like no other. Billions of dollars and tourists’ bodies transverse oceans every year and the historical, social, and political processes that follow these flows of money and people are appropriately complex for ethnographic engagement. Applied anthropology, as a method and theory dedicated to problem solving, seems is ripe for the study of cruise ship tourism.

This paper contributes to the archaeological study of movement in urban environments where built forms and natural features worked together to play a key role in structuring human mobility.We propose an analytical method using least cost analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to empirically measure social integration. The method defines mobility as the potential for pedestrian movement, and identifies locations where people were most likely to walk to or through in a landscape. The Dissertation uses border theory to craft a comparative study that explores the promotion of the white jí­baro in Puerto Rico throughout the twentieth century and the challenges to that racialized identity that emerged simultaneously. Young immigrant youth often live their lives across borders, either by physically crossing them for return visits and/or by metaphorically crossing them through social media and cultural identification. The authors argue these students are better understood as transnational, shifting the focus for educators away from imagining their immigrant students on a straight, one-way path to assimilation in the U.S. to understanding these youths’ abilities to cross borders. Specifically, they call for a redesignation of English Language Learners (ELLs) as Transnational English Learners (TELs). Since the early days of cinema, the translation techniques used to create subtitles have gone largely unchanged. Although these cinematic translations are characterized by both corruption and textual deformation, audiovisual translators have historically justified such textual violence by citing the temporal and spatial constraints necessitated by the subtitling apparatus. This thesis takes the corruption of contemporary film translation techniques, particularly those used to translate humor, as a point of departure in order to question the ethics of these subtitles from both a practical and theoretical standpoint.
