The Witness Of Dorothy Day And The Future Of Liberation Theology, Maria Clara Lucchetti Bingemer

A study around the concepts of “witness” and “testimony,” in the fields of Philosophy and Theology, as exemplified by the life work of Dorothy Day. The impact of her work in the U.S., from early to mid-twentieth century, and with the Catholic Worker Movement, is compared to that of the Latin American movement of Liberation Theology. Examples are provided of Dorothy Day’s observations on the agricultural workers strike and César Chávez, as well as various socio-political movements in Latin American countries. Vatos Sagrados: Cursillo And A Midwestern Catholic Borderlands, Adrian Bautista

This article uses a gendered religious borderlands perspective to analyze the Cursillo experiences of Latino Catholic deacons in the Diocese of Cleveland (OH) and the Diocese of Toledo (OH), who trace their family histories to Texas, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. By considering experiences of religious ecstasy, male social bonding, and spiritual activism as a result of Cursillo participation, this article attempts to provide insights into the complex relationships among gender, race, and religion. Joining other recent scholars who have conducted intellectual inquiries toward gendered borderlands literature, my drawing, based on semi-structured interviews and archival research, attempts to demonstrate the significance …

The Paradox Of Amnesia: Tondelli's Un Weekend Postmoderno, Stefano Giannini

Tondelli opens his Un weekend postmoderno. Cronache dagli anni Ottanta declaring an intention opposite to the display of amnesia. In the long table of contents of his book, he writes down everything, in an excruciating streaming of details, so that the table of content becomes an exhaustive index of names and ideas. Yet, hidden within the hundreds of analytical snapshots, one of its many characters mentions the importance of dissimulation. Dissimulation, according to Tondelli, hides what is known, to protect the dissimulator and to mask the truth. Also, amnesia is a voluntary practice that can be enacted in order to …

La novela La charca, del escritor puertorriqueño Manuel Zeno Gandía, se caracteriza por una indudable partición entre la representación de los seres humanos y de la naturaleza. El autor alterna cuadros de la sórdida realidad puertorriqueña a un fuerte lirismo descriptivo del paisaje isleño. De tal manera, mediante la contraposición de la sociedad enferma al paradisíaco paisaje natural, la representación de la mezquindad de los protagonistas de la novela resulta aún más impactante.

My proposal was designed both to enhance my own qualifications to teach the courses on Latin American Cultures and Civilizations and the Latin American literature course as well as to finally finish a project and an idea first conceived during my graduate work at the University of Illinois. This article uses Paulo Freire’s theories to illustrate Gutiérrez Alea’s attempts to continue a dynamic, Cuban revolution in light of what he depicts as a static revolution that has ceased to evolve. In fact, the film under study seems to present the achievements of Castro’s revolution as counter-revolutionary since the movement has suffered from bureaucratization, sloganism, and the banking model of education, which are all characteristics of an oppressive regime.

La Repolitización Del Autor En Margarita, Está Linda La Mar De Sergio Ramírez, Brian T. Chandler

Margarita, está linda la mar (1998) by Sergio Ramírez presents the reader with two key periods in Nicaraguan history: Ruben Darío’s return to Nicaragua in 1916 and the assassination of Anastasio Somoza in 1956. Through parody and artistic license, the narrator demystifies these grand figures of Nicaragua, highlighting the cultural, historical, and political ties between the modernist poet and the struggle for freedom under the Somoza dictatorship. As a result, a metaphorical space is created where discourse about historical figures is freed from previous ideological constraints allowing the reader to more completely explore the relationships between past and present.
