“Other Modernities”: Art, Visual Culture And Patrimony Outside The West. An Introduction, Silvia Naef, Irene Maffi, Wendy Shaw

The notion of modernity as a tabula rasa phenomenon that destroys the present in order to build the future is particularly complicated in the case of non-Western settings, where modernization was often understood as erasing local culture in favor of a template borrowed from the West. Historiographies of non-Western arts have mostly followed such a model, viewing fine arts, associated with modernity, as opposed to “traditional” arts, often commodified in the production of nostalgia or marketed for tourists. This article discusses the complexity of art production in non-Western contexts, beyond such reductive classifications.

La Literatura Latinoamericana Frente Al Nuevo Milenio: Idas Y Vueltas Entre Lo Local Y Lo Global, Félix Terrones

Abordamos la literatura latinoamericana contemporánea en el ámbito global. En este sentido, nos detenemos en tres aspectos representativos. Primero, la emergencia de grupos como McOndo (Chile) y Crack (México), los cuales plantean una concepción y una práctica diferentes de la novela. Luego, la consagración internacional de la literatura de Roberto Bolaño, un autor que, hasta cierto punto, puede ser leído como heredero de cierta tradición novelesca latinoamericana. Finalmente, abordaremos la circulación internacional de la literatura latinoamericana en los últimos años, la cual no ha dejado de interrogar el caracter tanto nacional como latinoamericano.

Colonial Maps And A Cartographic Reckoning In Post-Revolutionary Mexico City, Delia A. Cosentino

By the 20th century, 16th-century maps of Mexico City were not new, but their value was renewed by an urban elite grappling with the nation's historical geography. The capital saw fresh developments, including modern architecture and industry, while early excavations offered glimpses of Aztec Tenochtitlan buried beneath. This stratigraphic tension necessitated a reckoning; of concern here is the way that visual and intellectual cultures engaged in a particular cartographic reckoning. Colonial maps filled a void as artists, architects, art historians, and others worked to reconcile Mexico City’s modern identity with its ancient foundations.

L'étude des recueils d'ornements latino-américains publiés au cours de la première moitié du xxe siècle propose une nouvelle lecture de l'indigénisme et une approche spécifique des processus de resémantisation des motifs précolombiens à l'époque contemporaine. Cette analyse permet de cerner la volonté des gouvernements d'Amérique latine d’établir un socle culturel national mais aussi continental et de les étudier comme une des manifestations plastiques des processus indigénistes. Ce sujet tente de montrer, par le biais de l’ornement, les dynamiques communes et l’hybridation diachronique et diasporique de la culture visuelle latino-américaine.

One of the best-known visual manifestations of nineteenth-century Latin America is costumbrismo, a genre that describes social types and popular subjects. Scholarship has usually understood this genre as an illustration of early Republican times produced by the gaze of European artists, proposing a hierarchical structure in relation to the production and consumption patterns of these images. Following the path opened in the last decade by new studies, this paper contributes to the ongoing debates on costumbrismo, by examining the role played by a South American network of historians and collectors modeling identity narratives throughout the twentieth-century.

Cet article considère les projets d’art décoratif réalisés par John et Regina Graz, un couple pionnier dans l’introduction de l’idée d’ « art total » au Brésil (1920-30). On s’intéresse à la façon dont ils transposèrent dans un contexte très différent des modèles et des hiérarchies appris durant leur formation à Genève, selon un processus de réception sélective qui correspondait aux projets d'identité et de distinction de l'élite locale brésilienne. Au tournant du XXe siècle, Buenos Aires était une vitrine privilégiée pour la diffusion des artistes espagnols qui, pour promouvoir leur œuvre, ne bénéficiaient dans leur pays que d’une faible structure. Réfléchissant sur les imbrications entre la situation du marché de l’art espagnol et la réception des artistes espagnols en Argentine de 1890 à 1920 environ, cette étude contribue à éclairer les raisons de cette immigration massive et la manière dont ces circulations artistiques se sont opérées. Cet article analyse des questions d’identité et d’histoire du goût, dans une approche intercontinentale qui relève de la méthode des transferts culturels.

Cet article examine deux séries de peintures de paysages réalisées par le peintre voyageur Johann Moritz Rugendas dans les années 1830 : un corpus d’esquisses à l’huile peintes lors de son voyage au Mexique, et un autre ensemble de peintures effectuées lors de sa traversée des Andes entre Santiago du Chili et Mendoza. Il pose la question du transfert et de l’adaptation de techniques apprises et de courants de pensées intégrés en Europe, à des paysages de type nouveau vierges de toute représentation artistique. This introduction serves as a brief overview of this guest-edited issue of Artl@s Bulletin, which is dedicated to international networks in modern and contemporary Latin American art. Following a brief synopsis of the history of the field’s methodologies related to circulation, the articles that appear in this issue are summarized and compared. The author argues that a network- or circulation-based focus invariably incorporates heterogenous, even oppositional criteria.

This article focuses on a community of Latin American artists living in New York and the influence of regionalism and politics in their identification as a group, taking up the case of the Contrabienal, an art book published in 1971 as a call to boycott the XI São Paulo Biennial in protest of censorship and torture in dictatorial Brazil. Este artículo analiza los orígenes cosmopolitas de la revista Vida-Americana, organizada en 1921 por el pintor mexicano David Alfaro Siqueiros. Se reflexiona sobre el concepto de universalismo y clasicismo artístico señalando las conexiones que Siqueiros tuvo en Barcelona con Joan Salvat-Papasseit, Joaquín Torres-García, Rafael Barradas, Diego Rivera, Marius de Zayas y Élie Faure. El estudio explica la alternativa que Siqueiros señaló para el desarrollo de nuevos centros de producción artística en América.
