This study investigates certain stylistic, linguistic, technical and cultural constraints that translators usually encounter in the subtitling and dubbing of English films into the Arabic language. It highlights the solutions that they used in tackling these constraints by comparing the subtitled and dubbed version of the third instalment of the popular English adventure animated film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. In light of the basic technical constraints and the specific stylistic, linguistic and cultural constraints rooted in translation for audiences whose mother-tongue is Arabic, it is suggested that particular elements of translation theory can be beneficial …

This article outlines the stages of digital transformation undertaken at the School of Translators and Interpreters of Beirut (École de traducteurs et d’interprètes de Beyrouth) before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in order to evaluate the changes that encouraged instructors to rethink the complex links between technology and translation teaching. This complex transformation would not have occurred without actions taken at the institutional level and the sense of urgency felt by all stakeholders in response to lockdown measures. This article explores the interactive relation between the various signs of image-texts that are considered part of multimodal texts, in which meaning is conveyed by the complex interaction of their semiotic systems. Given the multimodal nature of image-texts, the translator needs to rely on a semiotic approach taking into account the visual-verbal interplay, in order to grasp the meaning and successfully translate image-texts, while preserving the same effect in the target language. Texts in English language textbooks for Palestinian refugees were analyzed for the types of verbal process expressed within the clauses of the texts, as well as for their concomitant participants and processes, using the system of transitivity from Systemic Functional Linguistics. The focus was on texts which present references to Palestine whether as participant type or location. The material process and its corresponding participants were analyzed experientially and semantically to explore the experiences through which the Palestinian context is presented in those texts. From 1920 to 1945, the publication of four stories by Gaskell-- Cranford, Cousin Phillis, Hand and Heart, and The Old Nurse’s Story, witnessed the transformation from politics-orientated to independence in China’s publishing history. This essay examines Zora Neale Hurston’s “Story in Harlem Slang” (1942) to analyze how the reading experience of the story captures relational dynamics in the community of Harlem. Written in the “Harlemese,” a distinctive lexicon developed in the 1920s, the story seemingly serves as a dictionary with an attached glossary and illustrations of the vernacular words. This study investigates the use of the utterance-final tteyuu [ʔtejɯː], a combination of the quotative particle tte and the verb yuu (‘say’). Although its lexicalized status and utterance-final occurrence are commonly observed, we still know little about its real-time functions. The analysis of 120 examples in varied contexts shows its general usage to clarify something expressed in the prior talk, which is a type of repair practice. More importantly, the analysis reveals how the participants’ understanding of the ongoing speech activity and multimodal cues affect its use and interpretation. Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own (1929) was first translated in Greek by Mina Dalamanga (Odysseus Editions) in 1980. Almost forty years later, in 2019, Vasia Tzanakari was assigned the translation of Woolf’s seminal text by Metaichmio Publications. And in 2021, a new translation by Sparti Gerodimou saw the light of day, published by Erato Publications (2021). For Bhanu Kapil, the drafting process of writing involves the translation of non-linguistic realities into storytelling, the nature of which must leave room for the performative experience that shapes writing. In Schizophrene (2011), Kapil engaged in adventitious composition processes when she sealed her manuscript in a Ziploc bag and threw it in the garden to spend months outdoors in the Colorado winter. The text, full of gaps created by the erased parts of the “winterized” manuscript, documents schizophrenia in diasporic Indian and Pakistani communities. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวโน้มการเลือกใช้กลวิธีการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความหมายของคำและวลีในบทบรรยายใต้ภาพภาษาอังกฤษ เฉพาะส่วนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อ ศาสนาและสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติของไทยที่ปรากฏในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ร่างทรง จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 52 คำ โดยมีสมมติฐานการวิจัยว่าในการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความคำและวลีที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อ ศาสนาและสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติของไทยจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษในบทบรรยายใต้ภาพภาษาอังกฤษของภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ร่างทรง นั้น ผู้แปลมีแนวโน้มจะเลือกใช้กลวิธีการเทียบทางวัฒนธรรมบ่อยครั้งที่สุด จากการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลทั้งหมด ผู้วิจัยพบว่าผู้แปลมีการเลือกใช้กลวิธีการแปลคำทั้งในระดับคำและระดับประโยค ในระดับคำ ผู้แปลเลือกใช้กลวิธีทั้งหมด 55 ครั้ง โดยเลือกใช้กลวิธีการปรับความหนาแน่น 15 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 27.27) การคัดลอกคำด้วยการถ่ายทอดในระดับคำ 15 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 27.27) การเทียบทางวัฒนธรรม 16 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 29.09) การคัดลอกคำด้วยการถ่ายทอดในระดับสัทศาสตร์ 7 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 12.73) และไม่พบการแปล 2 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 3.64) จะเห็นได้ว่าผู้แปลเลือกใช้กลวิธีในระดับคำในจำนวนที่ใกล้เคียงกัน โดยเลือกใช้กลวิธีการเทียบทางวัฒนธรรมบ่อยครั้งที่สุด ในระดับประโยค ผู้เลือกใช้กลวิธีทั้งหมด 14 ครั้ง โดยเลือกใช้กลวิธีการปรับมุมมอง 4 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 28.57) การจัดเรียงใหม่ 4 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 28.57) การปรับเปลี่ยนตัวบท 4 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 28.57) และการทดแทน 2 ครั้ง (คิดเป็นร้อยละ 14.29) จากการศึกษาวิจัยครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยพบว่าผู้แปลมีแนวโน้มที่จะเลือกกลวิธีการเทียบเคียงทางวัฒนธรรมบ่อยครั้งมากที่สุดในการแปลคำและวลีทางด้านวัฒนธรรมในส่วนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อ ศาสนาและสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติเพื่อให้ตัวบทฉบับแปลถ่ายทอดความหมายได้สอดคล้องกับวัฒนธรรมปลายทางซึ่งจะทำให้ผู้รับสารฉบับปลายทางเชื่อมโยงได้โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องอธิบายเพิ่มเติม ทำให้บทบรรยายใต้ภาพมีลักษณะเป็นไปตามข้อจำกัดของบทบรรยายใต้ภาพทั้งในด้านพื้นที่และด้านเวลา ผลการวิจัยครั้งนี้มีลักษณะสอดคล้องกับผลของงานวิจัยเรื่องการแปลคำทางวัฒนธรรมในส่วนที่ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับกลวิธีการแปลข้ามวัฒนธรรมในการแปลสื่อโสตทัศน์ ที่มีผลลัพธ์ว่ากลวิธีที่เน้นไปทางความเข้าใจของผู้รับสารฉบับปลายทาง โดยกลวิธีที่พบบ่อยครั้งมากที่สุดคือกลวิธีการเทียบทางวัฒนธรรมเช่นเดียวกัน

Vietnam during French colonialism (1861-1945) was a site of hybrid enunciations that displayed tensions with multiple languages (Chinese, Vietnamese, French) and multiple scripts (classical Chinese, Nôm script, Quốc Ngữ, and French) while existing under the influence of various powers (the Nguyễn feudal dynasty, the French colonial government, and the nascent Democratic Republic of Vietnam). The array of choices reflected a state of confusion in which every decision made by Vietnamese translators was inherently political. This eccentric hybridity is well exemplified in translations by Phạm Quỳnh 范瓊 (1892-1945), a late Nguyễn dynasty monarchist and early French colonial collaborator.

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาขนบในการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์ไทยแนวตลก (Comedy Movies) ในช่วงพ.ศ. 2543-2553 และในช่วงพ.ศ. 2554-2565 เพื่อค้นหาว่าในยุคหลังการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์ไทยแนวตลกมีขนบการแปลอย่างไร และสาเหตุของการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวคืออะไร นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยยังต้องการศึกษาว่าประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์นั้นจะมีผลต่อขนบในการแปลภาพยนตร์หรือไม่ โดยผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกชื่อภาพยนตร์แนวตลกทั้งหมด จำนวน 250 รายชื่อ และได้จำแนกประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์ในทั้งสองช่วงเวลาออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ ภาพยนตร์ตลก ภาพยนตร์ตลกโรแมนติก ภาพยนตร์ตลกสยองขวัญ ภาพยนตร์ตลกแอ็คชั่น และภาพยนตร์ตลกดราม่า จากการศึกษาผู้วิจัยพบว่า ในยุคแรก กลวิธีการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์ที่นิยมมากที่สุด ได้แก่ การแปลความ รองลงมาคือการตั้งชื่อใหม่ และการทับศัพท์ตามลำดับ ในขณะที่ช่วงยุคหลังนั้น กลวิธีการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์ที่นิยมมากที่สุด ได้แก่ การทับศัพท์ การตั้งชื่อใหม่ และการแปลความ เมื่อเปรียบเทียบขนบการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์ในสองช่วงเวลาตามประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์ พบว่ากลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลโดยเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ตลกสยองขวัญ โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตั้งชื่อใหม่ และกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ตลกแอ็คชั่น ภาพยนตร์ตลกสยองขวัญ และภาพยนตร์ตลกดราม่า โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลความ ทั้งนี้การใช้กลวิธีการแปลความและการตั้งชื่อใหม่อาจทำให้ ผู้ชมเข้าใจเนื้อหาสำคัญของภาพยนตร์และอาจทำให้ผู้ชมตัดสินใจชมภาพยนตร์ สำหรับกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลแบบเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมต้นทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ตลก และภาพยนตร์ตลกโรแมนติก โดยสะท้อนผ่านกลวิธีการแปลแบบทับศัพท์ ซึ่งการทับศัพท์เป็นการรักษาชื่อในภาษาต้นทาง แต่ในบางกรณีชื่อในต้นทางก็เป็นการทับศัพท์คำภาษาอังกฤษ ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ผู้ชมในวัฒนธรรมปลายทางเกิดความเข้าใจและสนใจที่จะชมภาพยนตร์ดังกล่าว

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลวัจนลีลาของตัวละคร Cole และ Solas ในเกม Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) ผู้วิจัยคัดเลือกตัวอย่างบทสนทนาในเกมดังกล่าวของตัวละครทั้งสองพร้อมบริบทแวดล้อมทั้งหมด 30 หน้า และตั้งสมมติฐานในการวิจัยว่าปัญหาด้านวัจนลีลาอันประกอบด้วยการใช้โครงสร้างประโยคไม่สมบูรณ์ โวหารบุคลาธิษฐาน ถ้อยคำที่มีความกำกวมคลุมเครือ เลียนแบบจังหวะหนักเบาของกาพย์กลอน เล่นสัมผัสอักษร และเลือกสรรถ้อยคำที่มีระดับภาษาสูงกว่าบทสนทนาปกติ ออกมาเป็นบทบรรยายภาษาไทยได้อย่างเหมาะสม มีอรรถรสเทียบเคียงได้กับต้นฉบับนั้นสามารถแก้ไขด้วยการวิเคราะห์วัจนลีลาตามแนวทางการวิเคราะห์และการแปลตัวบทประเภทวิดีโอเกมที่มินาโกะ โอ’เฮเกน (Minako O’Hagan) และการ์เมนแมนจิรอน (Carmen Mangiron) (2013) รายงาน กรอบวิเคราะห์ Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) ของไมเคิล ฮัลลิเดย์ (Michael Halliday, 2014) แนวคิดการแปลวัจนลีลาของจีน โบส-ไบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier, 2019) ข้อจำกัดและกลวิธีการแปลบทบรรยายภาพยนตร์ที่เสนอโดยฆอร์เฆ ดิอัซ-ซินตัส (Jorge Díaz-Cintas) และอาลิเนอ รีมาเอล (Aline Remael) (2020) ร่วมกับการศึกษาโครงสร้างประโยคที่ไม่สมบูรณ์ในภาษาไทยผลการวิจัยพบว่าทฤษฎีและแนวทางต่าง ๆ ตามที่ได้ศึกษามีประโยชน์ต่อการแปลเป็นอย่างยิ่ง สามารถใช้แก้ไขปัญหาการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาให้มีสมมูลภาพใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ ทั้งยังทำให้ผู้วิจัยตระหนักและใส่ใจเรื่องกลวิธีที่ใช้เพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในภาษาอังกฤษให้ออกมาอย่างเหมาะสมในภาษาไทยด้วยความต่างทางภาษา สรรหาวิธีทดแทนหรือชดเชยอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ สอดรับกับหน้าที่บทบรรยายได้อย่างเหมาะสม
