Combining a careful reading of selected passages from Goethe’s Faust I and II and of marginal but nevertheless revealing lines on maybe the actual protagonist of the “Tragödie”, Mephistopheles, this paper aims to present aspects of what one could call Goethe’s vision of a modern devil. In this literary research essay, I have translated a Dutch short story into English. I translated the text in two different ways, a literal/direct translation, and a revised and research-based translation. This text includes Dutch idioms, metaphors, humor, and expressions. The translation of these directly have no significant meaning in English, which is why a translation of these should be done carefully. This research paper examines the best ways and difficulties of translating a source language, its cultural-bound references and values, into a target language.

Structural Analysis Of Code-Switching In Tanzanian Swahili-English Online Telecom Adverts, Emmanuel Ilonga Dr

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study analyses structural configurations of code-switching from Swahili-English online business-related advertisements in Tanzania. The study uses advertisements disseminated by telecom corporations on Facebook. Through the matrix language frame (MLF), and the 4–M models of code-switching, the study discloses the dominance of Swahili as the matrix language (ML), supplying a relatively higher quantity of content morphemes (CM) in clauses; whilst English becomes the embedded language (EL). The Swahili’s supremacy in larger mixed language structures reflects the higher application of Swahili in day-to-day interactions in Tanzania, while English ‘chips in’ at times. Abstract

Purpose – In this paper, a call to the library and information science community to support documentation and conservation of cultural and biocultural heritage has been presented.

Design/methodology/approach – Based in existing Literature, this proposal is generative and descriptive— rather than prescriptive—regarding precisely how libraries should collaborate to employ technical and ethical best practices to provide access to vital data, research and cultural narratives relating to climate.

Findings – COVID-19 and climate destruction signal urgent global challenges. Library best practices are positioned to respond to climate change. Literature indicates how libraries preserve, share and cross-link cultural and scientific knowledge. …

My paper discusses issues of translation particularly in relation to the untranslatable as understood by Jacques Derrida in “Des tours de Babel.” A single sentence from Finnegans Wake by James Joyce: "cha kai rotty kai makkar, sahib" sheds light on the issues of polysemy in a novel that deliberately overturns assumptions about the English language. Finnegans Wake as can be seen in the study of this sentence, was composed in anticipation of a non-European reader and a non-European audience. Joyce in this instance is performing an act of translation, one which translates a sentence of Hindi (albeit grammatically suspect) in …

In the contemporary cognitive militarism, which is fast gaining ground in terms of its popularity, self-narratives are sought to be pitted against the practice of translation. The `self’ in this sense is that which is produced as a result of a process of self-narration or autopoiesis. What is foregrounded in cognitive militarism is not poetic subjectivity, but rather an instrumental subjectivity in the form of auto narration and self-apprehension in the form of self-narratives.

The rejection suffered in Spain by Fernando Arrabal’s cinematography, specifically by his films dealing with the Spanish Civil War, Viva la muerte (1971) and L’arbre de Guernica (1975), stands in contrast with the international appraisal received in France or the United States. The Spanish playwright and filmmaker, exiled in France since 1955, confronted with his cinematic memory the established historical master narrative in Spain both during Franco’s dictatorship and the newly born democracy, and experienced accordingly a fierce national critical backlash.

This research thesis project focuses on the benefits of legal professionals being bilingual and my support of utilizing bilingual legal professionals over language translators. This focuses on the communities they support, including their clients, other legal professionals, and all American citizens. There are analyses of language used in English-speaking and Spanish-speaking legal systems, as well as previous bilingual integration attempts. As a pre-law student that speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, I want to know how to advocate for myself as a future attorney and how to advocate for future clients who will need the assistance of a bilingual legal professional. …
