In the course of his life Tolkien explored his thoughts and feelings on the role of language-invention in fiction in two key manifestos – his November 1931 talk 'A Secret Vice' and his 1954 O'Donnell lecture 'English and Welsh'. But Tolkien not only used his mythology to illustrate how these theories and the four key characteristics he felt invented languages should have (sound-sense, structure, link to history/myth) but also embedded in the very narrative and discourse of his mythic texts examples of Elves using and being practitioners of his own theories on language. Technologies open up different communication patterns for individuals to use (Tomas & Carlson 2015; Walther, 1996; Wei & Leung, 1999). Thus, this study develops the “ASOHIO” perspective, which incorporates a range of new and old communication patterns, online communication, offline communication, synchronous communication, asynchronous communication, interpersonal communication, and hyperpersonal communication. The primary objective of this research project is to show varying degrees of textual and semantic contributions that semantic density and grammatical metaphors make in the way that TOEFL iBT reading sections and Japanese EFL textbooks are used. This thesis examines the work included in Usman Oladeinde’s MFA thesis exhibition. The goal of this thesis paper is to explore major themes such as communication, identity, change, centeredness, landscapes, and language. These paintings present Arabic letter forms transformed into illegible shapes which are painted on landscape backgrounds, often depicting an aesthetic of textual elements receding into space. All these works are inspired by the Qibla, which is represented in the abstract and painted using acrylic media. Occasionally image transfers are mounted on the painted surface.

การศึกษาเรื่อง ชาตินิยมกับความเป็นอื่นที่พบในการแปลบทละครเรื่อง ‘The Merchant of Venice’ ของ William Shakespeare กรณีศึกษา: บทพระราชนิพนธ์แปลในพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเรื่อง ‘เวนิสวาณิช’ นี้เป็นการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพตามแนวทางวัฒนธรรมศึกษาในศาสตร์การแปล โดยมุ่งศึกษาบทบาทของการแปลในการประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นอื่นและความเป็นไทยในฐานะส่วนหนึ่งของแนวคิดชาตินิยมที่ปรากฏในบทแปล เพื่อหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบทบาทของการแปลกับบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวในประเด็นดังกล่าว ในการศึกษา ผู้วิจัยได้ทบทวนทฤษฎีและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยเฉพาะในกรอบของศาสตร์การแปล ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องอุดมการณ์ วาทกรรม และทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ ตลอดจนแนวคิดเรื่องความเป็นอื่นและความเป็นไทย แล้วจึงได้ศึกษาแง่มุมที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ปรากฏในตัวบทต้นฉบับและบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ของฉบับแปล ก่อนจะทำการวิเคราะห์บทแปลที่มีการสอดแทรกวาทกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องความเป็นอื่นจากตัวบทต้นฉบับ The Merchant of Venice ของวิลเลียม เชกสเปียร์ ในบทพระราชนิพนธ์แปล เวนิสวาณิช ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวด้วยแนวทางวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ใน เวนิสวาณิช ปรากฏการปรับบทแปลที่มีส่วนในการกำหนดสร้างและขับเน้นอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นอื่นของตัวละครในเรื่อง และสอดแทรกอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยอันพึงประสงค์ในสายตาของฝ่ายอำนาจนำ ได้แก่การเชิดชูสถาบันกษัตริย์ระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ในฐานะสัญลักษณ์ของชาติ การปรับบทแปลเช่นนี้เป็นผลจากความกังวลที่มีต่อสถานะความเป็นชาติของสยามท่ามกลางกระแสการไหลบ่าของอิทธิพลจากต่างชาติ ทั้งจากชาติตะวันตกที่เข้ามาล่าอาณานิคมในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และจากชาวจีนโพ้นทะเลที่เข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในสยาม และเผยให้เห็นบทบาทของการแปลในการเป็นเครื่องมือขับเคลื่อนอุดมการณ์ โดยสอดคล้องกับบริบททางสังคมและการเมืองในสมัยดังกล่าว

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีและแนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยในวรรณกรรมเยาวชนชุดแฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์ ประพันธ์โดยเจ.เค. โรว์ลิ่ง และศึกษาเปรียบเทียบคำแปลคำสร้างใหม่ที่พบในฉบับแปลของสุมาลี บำรุงสุข วลีพร หวังซื่อกุล และงามพรรณ เวชชาชีวะ รวมถึงศึกษาลักษณะและแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์คำสร้างใหม่ในวรรณกรรมชุดนี้ ผู้วิจัยใช้แนวคิดเรื่องการสร้างและการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์กเป็นเกณฑ์ในการคัดสรรรวบรวมคำสร้างใหม่ จัดแบ่งประเภทคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับ และเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์คำแปล คำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล ควบคู่ไปกับแนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาไทย แนวคิดสมมูลภาพในการแปล แนวคิดบริบทในการแปล และแนวคิดเรื่องลักษณะของวรรณกรรมเยาวชนแนวแฟนตาซี ผลการวิจัยพบว่าคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับมี 5 ประเภทคือ คำเดิมที่สื่อความหมายใหม่ คำที่ร้อยเรียงขึ้นมาใหม่ คำที่แปรมาจากรากคำอื่นรวมทั้งการสนธิคำ คำปรากฏร่วมใหม่ และคำสร้างใหม่จากอักษรย่อ และพบกลวิธีการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล 6 กลวิธีคือ การทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัว การแปลตรงตัวประกอบทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัวประกอบตีความ การแปลตรงตัวและใช้อักษรย่อตามคำแปล และการตีความและ สรุปเก็บใจความ ในการเปรียบเทียบกลวิธีการแปลของนักแปลพบว่านักแปลใช้ทุกกลวิธีในการแปล คำสร้างใหม่ไปในทิศทางเดียวกันโดยพิจารณาจากลักษณะเด่นในองค์ประกอบของคำควบคู่ไปกับการพิจารณาบริบท และในการแปลคำสร้างใหม่แต่ละประเภท นักแปลใช้กลวิธีในการแปลที่หลากหลายโดยจะมีอย่างน้อยหนึ่งกลวิธีที่นักแปลใช้เหมือนกัน นอกจากนั้นเป็นการใช้กลวิธีที่เหมือนกันระหว่างสุมาลีกับวลีพร และ สุมาลีกับงามพรรณ เนื่องมาจากพบคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปลของสุมาลีมากที่สุด

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามในนวนิยายชุด A Series of Unfortunate Events เขียนโดย Lemony Snicket แปลโดย อาริตา พงศ์ธรานนท์ โดยศึกษาจากข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามที่มี 4 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การอธิบายความหมายแบบตรงตัว 2) การอธิบายความหมายตามสถานการณ์ 3) การอธิบายความหมายด้วยการใช้ความหมายมากกว่าหนึ่งความหมาย และ 4) การอธิบายด้วยการหลากคำหรือการใช้คำที่ง่ายกว่าหรือซับซ้อนน้อยกว่า ทฤษฎีและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ใช้ประกอบการศึกษา ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ของ Christiane Nord ทฤษฎี Scene-and-frame Semantics ของ Charles J. Fillmore และแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความ (Interpretative Approach) ของ Jean Delisle โดยผู้วิจัยใช้ทฤษฎีดังกล่าวในการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามว่าผู้แปลใช้วิธีการใดในการเลือกแปลข้อความลักษณะดังกล่าว หลังจากที่ได้นำทฤษฎีดังกล่าวข้างต้นมาวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลพบว่า ผู้แปลจำเป็นต้องวิเคราะห์ภาพ (Scene) ของต้นฉบับเพื่อให้เห็นภาพและความหมายที่ชัดเจนตามที่ผู้ประพันธ์ต้องการสื่อสาร ก่อนถ่ายทอดฉบับแปลโดยใช้รูปแบบ (Frame) ที่ทำให้เห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับ ซึ่งในการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามทั้ง 4 รูปแบบ บางครั้งผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลตรงตัวได้ จึงจำเป็นต้องปรับรูปแบบทางภาษาให้แตกต่างจากต้นฉบับโดยยึดความหมายเป็นหลักเพื่อให้ผู้อ่านฉบับแปลเห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกับผู้อ่านต้นฉบับ กรณีที่ผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลแบบตรงตัวได้ ผู้แปลจึงใช้วิธีอื่นในการแก้ปัญหาการแปล เช่น การแปลโดยการอธิบายขยายความ หรือการเลือกที่จะตัดเนื้อความบางส่วนเพื่อให้ข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามเป็นเหตุเป็นผลในภาษาไทย

การถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในนวนิยายเรื่อง Days Without End ของ เซบาสเตียน แบร์รี่, ณัฐกรณ์ อังสิริเสณี

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นด้วยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะของวัจนลีลา วิเคราะห์ปัญหา การแปล รวมถึงแก้ปัญหาโดยการหาแนวทางการแปล เพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในนวนิยายอิงประวัติศาสตร์เรื่อง Days Without End ของเซบาสเตียน แบร์รี อันไม่เป็นไปตามขนบการประพันธ์นวนิยายบางส่วน ให้ได้บทแปลที่ทำหน้าที่ทั้งสื่อความหมาย และให้อรรถรสแก่ผู้อ่านได้ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ การถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาเริ่มจากการศึกษาแนวคิดและระเบียบวิธีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาวัจนลีลาประเภทต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลา ของ พอล ซิมป์สัน (Paul Simpson) ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลาเชิงวจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ ของ เอลิซาเบธ แบล็ค (Elizabeth Black) และแนวทางการแปลวัจนลีลา ของ ฌ็อง โบส-ไบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier) รวมถึงลักษณะการประกอบสร้างทางภาษาเพื่อสร้างความ โดดเด่นให้กับวัจนลีลา และผลงานด้านการแปลวัจนลีลาที่มีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกันอันปรากฎในวรรณกรรมเรื่องอื่น หลังจากที่ผู้วิจัยได้รวบรวมแนวคิด ระเบียบวิธี และทฤษฎีข้างต้นแล้วนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์และการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลา พบว่าความรู้ที่ได้จากการศึกษาเหล่านั้นสามารถช่วยแก้ปัญหาการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาจากภาษาของต้นฉบับให้เป็นภาษาปลายทางได้เป็นผลสาเร็จ อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังต้องอาศัยองค์ประกอบด้านความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์และบริบททางสังคมที่เป็นฉากหลังของ นวนิยายอย่างละเอียดลึกซึ้ง เพื่อช่วยในการทำความเข้าใจเนื้อหาและสารของผู้ประพันธ์อันสะท้อนผ่านวัจนลีลาเหล่านั้นให้ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject ในตัวบทนวนิยาย จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย และเพื่อประมวลกลวิธีการแปลจากกรณีศึกษาเรื่อง The Murder of Roger Ackroyd ของอกาธา คริสตี้ และหนังสือแปลเรื่อง คดีฆาตกรรมโรเจอร์ แอ็กครอยด์ โดยพิรุณรัตน์ เนื่องจากภาษาไทยไม่มีโครงสร้างประโยคที่เทียบเท่ากันทางความหมายกับโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ จึงอาจเป็นปัญหาการแปลที่สำคัญได้ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งเน้นที่ประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject จานวน 63 ประโยค และกลวิธีการแปลสองระดับ ได้แก่ ระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำ ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงปริมาณสรุปได้ว่า กลวิธีการแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคใช้การปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่จำนวน 60 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 95.24 และใช้การรักษาโครงสร้างประโยคตามต้นฉบับจำนวน 3 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 4.76 ในการปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่พบว่าผู้แปลใช้การหาประธาน หรือการปรับส่วนใด ส่วนหนึ่งของประโยคเป็นประธานมากที่สุด จำนวน 44 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 73.33 รองลงมาได้แก่การเปลี่ยนประโยคเป็นวลี ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลระดับคำใช้การเติมคำเน้นมากที่สุด จำนวน 17 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 26.98 รองลงมาได้แก่การเติมลักษณนาม ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพสรุปได้ว่า การแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ในนวนิยายเรื่องนี้ นักแปลใช้กลวิธี การปรับบทแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำร่วมกัน โดยไม่รักษารูปแบบโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์เสมอไป แต่ยังคงรักษาหน้าที่และเจตนาในการสื่อสารของโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นแนวทาง การแปลที่นักแปลอาศัยการตีความและทำความเข้าใจความหมายโดยนัยที่สื่อผ่านการใช้ประโยคเคล็ฟต์เป็นหลักก่อน แล้วจึงถ่ายทอดความหมายนั้นเป็นภาษาปลายทางอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ สอดคล้องกับแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความที่เดอลีลส์ (1988) นำเสนอ ทฤษฎี Skopostheorie ที่ไร้ส์และแฟร์เมียร์ (1984) นำเสนอ และทฤษฎีวัจนกรรมที่เฮอนิกช์และคุสเมาล์ (1982) นำมาใช้ในการแปล

สารนิพนธ์เล่มนี้เป็นการศึกษาการแปลมุกตลกในตัวบทที่คัดสรรจากการ์ตูนเรื่อง พีนัทส์ ของ ชาลส์ เอ็ม ชูลซ์ สมมติฐานในการวิจัยคือ การแปลมุกตลกในตัวบทที่คัดสรรอาจใช้แนวทางของเคลาส์ ไคน์เดิล (Klaus Kaindl) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ตัวบทตามลักษณะสำคัญและโครงสร้างของการ์ตูนช่อง แนวคิด Visual Narrative Grammar ของ นีล โคห์น (Neil Cohn) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ลำดับการเล่าเรื่อง รายงานการวิจัยการนำเสนอความตลกที่รวบรวมโดย นารีรัตน์ บุญช่วย และทฤษฎีอารมณ์ขัน 3 ทฤษฎี ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีข่มท่าน (Disparage Theory) ของ โทมัส ฮอบส์ (Thomas Hobbes) ทฤษฎีผิดฝาผิดตัว (Incongruity Theory) ของ อิมมานูเอล คานต์ (Immanuel Kant) และทฤษฎีปลดปล่อย (Release Theory) ของ ซีคมุนท์ ฟร็อยท์ (Sigmund Freud) เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะและกลวิธีการสร้างมุกตลกและวิเคราะห์มุกตลก รวมทั้งกลวิธีการแปล แบบตีความ (Interpretive Approach) และแนวทางการจัดการทางภาษา (Language Manipulation) ของฌอง เดอลิล (Jean Delisle) เพื่อแปลตัวบทให้เกิดสมมูลภาพเทียบเท่ากับตัวบทต้นฉบับทั้งในด้าน โครงสร้างและความหมาย ผลการศึกษาคือ แนวทางของเคลาส์ ไคน์เดิล และ Visual Narrative Grammar ของ นีล โคห์น สามารถใช้วิเคราะห์ตัวบทโดยรวมและลำดับการเล่าเรื่องของตัวบทที่คัดสรรได้ตามลำดับ และการ วิเคราะห์มุกตลกในตัวบทที่คัดสรรนั้นสามารถใช้การนำเสนอความตลกที่รวบรวมโดย นารีรัตน์ บุญช่วย และ ทฤษฎีอารมณ์ขัน 3 ทฤษฎี ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีข่มท่าน ของ โทมัส ฮอบส์ ทฤษฎีผิดฝาผิดตัว ของ อิมมานูเอล คานต์ และทฤษฎีปลดปล่อย ของ ซีคมุนท์ ฟร็อยท์ ได้ …

การแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ กรณีศึกษาพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร, ณัฐสุดา แก่นน้อย

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการแปลตัวบทในพิพิธภัณฑ์ และแปลตัวบทต้นฉบับบางส่วนในพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร โดยผู้วิจัยเลือกแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บรรยายวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร รวมทั้งหมด ๑๙๗ ป้าย คือป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๑ ของนิทรรศการจัดแสดงเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับวิถีชีวิตชาวสวนของชุมชนวัดหนังในอดีต และป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๒ ของนิทรรศการซึ่งจัดแสดงเรื่องยาแผนโบราณของวัดหนัง ผลการศึกษา พบว่าการแปลป้ายแสดงคำบรรยายวัตถุที่จัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑ์ นอกจากจะต้องพิจารณาเลือกใช้คำศัพท์ที่เหมาะสมกับกลุ่มผู้อ่านในวัฒนธรรมปลายทางแล้ว ยังต้องพิจารณาวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงประกอบด้วย เนื่องจากวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงบางชิ้นแม้จะมีชื่อเรียกเหมือนกับคำในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง แต่ลักษณะเฉพาะของวัตถุชิ้นนั้นไม่เหมือนกับวัตถุในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง และวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงบางชิ้นไม่พบในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง โดยผู้วิจัยพบว่าการใช้แนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับ ของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด ทฤษฎีของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก ทฤษฎีหลากรูปแบบ ทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ (Museum Translation) และความรู้เกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ สามารถนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาตัวบทและวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่พบในการแปลป้ายของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อวัดหนังฯ นำไปสู่แนวทางการแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ซึ่งผู้วิจัยจึงจำเป็นต้องมีการปรับเปลี่ยนคำศัพท์ และโครงสร้างประโยคในภาษาปลายทางที่ใช้ในการแปลใหม่ เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดง และจะสามารถทำให้ผู้อ่านได้รับความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องมากที่สุด

This paper presents a quantitative fine-grained manual evaluation approach to comparing the performance of different machine translation (MT) systems. We build upon the well-established Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) error taxonomy and implement a novel method that assesses whether the differences in performance for MQM error types between different MT systems are statistically significant. We conduct a case study for English-to- Croatian, a language direction that involves translating into a morphologically rich language, for which we compare three MT systems belonging to different paradigms: pure phrase-based, factored phrase-based and neural.
