The response of Arab leaders to the fire in one of Islam's most venerated mosques compelled three members of the Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies to release a plea for justice. A shortened version of this statement was published as a letter to the Editor of The New York Times on September 10,1969. This plea was written by Msgr. John M. Oesterreicher and co-signed by Fr. Edward H. Flannery and Sr. Rose Thering, O.P.

From March 3rd to 5th, 1967, Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies, sponsored a symposium on "Vatican II and the Jews." The weekend culminated in the conferral of an honorary Doctorate of Law upon the Editor, the director of the symposium, in recognition of his work at the Vatican Council. After receiving the hood from Dr. S. Thomas Greenburg, President of the College, Msgr. John M. Oesterreicher made this "acceptance speech."
