The documentary Maka offers an account of Makaping’s journey of migration from Cameroon, her arrival in Italy in 1982 following the tragic death of her partner, her success as a journalist and television host, and her more recent relocation to Mantua. Maka focuses on questions of national belonging, and it reflects on how the perception of migration and race has changed since Makaping first came to Italy in the 1990s. This paper, adapted from a talk given for the Institute of the Humanities at Simon Fraser University on April 26 2023, explores intersecting issues taken up by an in-progress long poem I am currently writing. That long poem, “The Middle,” explores questions of climate displacement, migration, and refuge via a writing-though of Dante’s Purgatorio—itself a poem of pilgrimage. This senior integrative research will unpack the trials of displaced African people migrating into Italy. The migration crisis is a byproduct of our complicated international system riddled with wars, poverty, and persecution of marginalized groups. This study will focus on intersectional identities to facilitate a demand advocating for a group of people with limited agency, autonomy, and visibility. Some key questions to be answered in this study are: What challenges facing migrants in Italy within narratives in film and literature? How do positionality and locality play a role in migrant narratives?

This work discusses Italy's migrant reception system including its flaws and their effects. Furthermore, this work explores an alternative, sustainable model of migrant reception created in Riace, Calabria, that has been successful in varying towns across Italy. Ultimately, this work argues that this system, which is beneficial to both Italians and incoming migrants — specifically asylum seekers — can and should be implemented nationally to counter the current flawed system.
