Today we are speaking with Aaron Sheehan-Dean, Fred C. Frey Professor of Southern Studies at Louisiana State University and the Chair of LSU’s History Department. He teaches courses on nineteenth-century U.S. history, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and southern History. He is the author of Why Confederates Fought: Family and Nation in Civil War Virginia (UNC Press, 2007), Concise Historical Atlas of the U.S. Civil War (Oxford University Press, 2008), and is the editor of several other volumes. Callis, Hopkinsville, Kentucky to his brother-in-law Thomas Garland, Charlottesville, Virginia. He refers to the affection of his young son for his late mother’s family, and expresses concern over the financial consequences of Virginia’s establishment of free schools. He also reports on the anticipated discussion of slavery at Kentucky’s upcoming constitutional convention and to Senator Henry Clay’s proposal for gradual emancipation, which is favored by a “respectable minority.” He expects the convention merely to prohibit the importation of slaves, …

The two-semester-long project typically begins with an annotated bibliography in History 1301, followed by a complete paper in History 1302. Each student chooses her or his own topic bounded only by the chronological scope of the course with a demonstrable connection to the people of the United States. Regarding the recent assassination of President John F. Kennedy, she speculates that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was part of a government-orchestrated plot, that he knew his own killer Jack Ruby, and that more than a single gun was fired. She comments on many Texans’ antipathy toward the Kennedy Administration and suspicion of Vice President Lyndon Johnson for another murder “coverup,” but does not blame Texas for the assassination. She also shares some genealogical data.

Includes information about her life, death and funeral, Christmas cards, clippings, and a check signed with Miss Dynamite’s paw print and honored by a Scottsville bank.

Letter written by poet Peter Davison, undated, to Robert Penn Warren in which he thanks Warren for the day which inspired the enclosed poem, “Swimming, 1935,” which he dedicated to Warren on 10 March 1981. It also includes a touching poem by Davison about the death of his mother Natalie (Weiner) Davison. The printed poem was sent to Warren and his wife Eleanor “with regards, Peter Davison, 11/15/[19]61.” The originals of these documents are located in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University.

This project explores how shared authority in national parks can be reassessed through the lens of administrative repatriation. The majority of NPS interpretations focus on conservation and naturalist education, perpetuate a mythology of “gifted land,” and have neglected cultural imprints as an integral element of the land’s history. The rich histories of the peoples that have occupied these lands over time provide an opportunity for the NPS that few museums possess: to present an American history that is deeply interwoven with the natural landscape and recall events back farther than any constructed museums can possibly venture.
