During May 1989, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a pedestrian survey and shovel testing of the area proposed for development of a children's park, a project of the City of Victoria Parks and Recreation Department. The survey was intended to locate any archaeological remains which might be impacted by construction of the children's park. No archaeological sites were identified during the project, and it is recommended that no further archaeological investigations are needed.

In March 1989, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a subsurface testing program at two localities proposed for well drilling by the Edwards Underground Water District in New Braunfels, Texas. The testing was done to locate and evaluate any archaeological remains which might be affected by well drilling. Prehistoric archaeological remains were encountered at Well Locality 1, but Well Locality 2 was devoid of any cultural materials. No significant damage to archaeological resources is expected with the drilling of the proposed wells. However, monitoring the drilling operation at Well Locality 1 …

On September 23, 1988, a cultural resources survey was conducted within the proposed boundaries of, Bandera City Park, Bandera County, Texas. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and the Texas Antiquities Code. As a result of a systematic pedestrian survey of the planned ISO-acre park, one prehistoric site (41 BN 94) was identified. Because of the extensive natural disturbance to the locale, no further work is recommended at site 41 BN 94. It is not considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places or as …

During August 1988, a cultural resources pedestrian survey was conducted within the West Salado Creek Outfall pipeline easement (two-mile long by 50-foot wide) in southeastern Bexar County, Texas. As a result of surface examination and limited subsurface shovel tests, one prehistoric site (41 BX 785) was recorded. Although some lithic debit age and burned rock fragments were found in the shovel tests at the prehistoric site, there was not enough information from the limited tests to determine if the site is intact. Further testing is recommended to determine if the site is potentially eligible to be nominated to the National …

In July 1988, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted monitoring of the construction of hand-dug trenches for installation of an air conditioning system in the church of Mission Concepcion. During the trenching for installation of electric lines one wall of the first convento was crossed. A small collection of artifacts taken from the backdirt of the trench is described, and the more unusual ones are illustrated.

In February 1988, the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological survey and archival and historical research for the Stinson Municipal Airport in south Bexar County, Texas, under contract with TransPlan. No prehistoric or historic archaeological sites were found. However, a historic cemetery on the grounds of the airport was surveyed, and its approximate visible limits were recorded. It is recommended that further work be done to completely delineate the cemetery's boundaries before expansion of the airport is planned.

During October and November 1988, subsurface testing (Phase II) was conducted at prehistoric site 41 BX 785, found in the West Salado Creek Outfall pipeline easement during a pedestrian survey (Phase I) of the project area. The Phase II limited testing determined that the subsurface portion of the prehistoric site is essentially intact, and at least two stratified occupation levels were identified. Although the tests did not produce diagnostic (datable) cultural materials, there is a notable amount of stone tool debit age in the central area, some unidentified biface fragments and burned rock which probably represents displaced hearth stones. Test excavations were conducted in November 1987 by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a planned relocation of the eastbound lanes of Martin Street in downtown San Antonio. The lots in question were located on the north side of the early town site, and were known to have contained the residence of Thaddeus Smith, the county clerk for Bexar County in the last half of the 19th century. Testing was done by backhoe and by controlled hand excavations.

The Mission Road Realignment Project proposes to relocate the current position of Mission Road, which transects the original Mission Concepcion quadrangle, farther west and in the vicinity of the road's 18th-century location. Archaeological testing conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research sought to determine if significant cultural resources would be adversely impacted by the road relocation project. Intensive testing established that no significant remains were located within or adjacent to the proposed right-of-way.

Site 41KR243, the Camp Pearl Wheat Site, is located along FM 783 and the south bank of Town Creek in Kerr County, central Texas (Fig. 1). The site was identified and recommended for testing by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) in response to plans for realigning a hazardous curve on FM 783. Test excavations were performed in June 1988 and consisted of three 2-meter square hand-excavated units within the proposed 120 foot wide right-of-way. The Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) will replace the bridge on CR 439 (signed "County Road 129") over Brushy Creek in the south-central part of the county at Norman's Crossing (Figures 1 and 2). The new bridge will be built just east of the present bridge. The present bridge will continue to be used until the new bridge is completed, which eliminates the need for a temporary detour easement. Additional right-of-way will be obtained east of the county road in order to construct the new bridge and approaches.

These investigations were sponsored by the Colorado River Municipal Water District in compliance with federal requirements for a construction permit from the Corps of Engineers. Preliminary historical and archaeological investigation of the Robert Henry Seale farm residences (41RT362) utilizin g a metal detector and limited shovel testing indicate that a recent owner of the property removed both residential structures, destroying the site and extensively damaging any buried deposits. It is the estimation of the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation that the physical remains of the occupation of the property have been disrupted to such an extent that they now have no value in answering cultural- historical questions.

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing on Site 41DW260 in DeWitt County during January 1988. The site is located along FM 3402 about 2.5 miles west of Cuero, Texas and extends from the north side of the highway onto private property. Testing has shown that the area within the right-of-way is a 20-25 cm deep prehistoric campsite where the primary activities were the reduction of fist-sized flint cobbles into usable flakes and the collection of freshwater mussels as a food resource. In January 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract to monitor construction for a sewer line for the San Antonio Wastewater Improvements Program. The primary concern was if the San Jose Acequia would be in the location of construction. Monitoring operations began in October of the same year and continued until January 1987. The acequia was exposed in three locations and proved to be an unlined ditch.

In April 1987, the authors monitored excavation of trenches for a drainage project in the area of North St. Mary's and Ashby Streets north of downtown San Antonio. The main concern was to observe and record the location and configuration of the Upper Labor Acequia in this area when it was crossed by trenching machines. A cross section of the acequia was recorded at the intersection of St. Mary's and Myrtle Streets.

The purpose of the excavations was to determine whether buried wall footings and occupation surfaces were preserved in an area where a drain pipe was proposed to be installed to carry rainwater away from the convento. In February 1986, test excavations were conducted outside the north wall of Mission San Juan Capistrano (41 BX 5). This testing was done to determine any potential impact of proposed City Water Board trenching activities on buried structural features. Although no structural remains were found, midden deposits were encountered. This report discusses the artifacts and the identified depositional strata of the midden.

Excavations at site 41 BX 1, located behind the Olmos Dam in San Antonio, Texas, were funded by the San Antonio River Authority. The excavations resulted in the documentation of a Late Archaic cemetery and Early to Late Transitional Archaic occupations. Thirteen human burials, accompanied by a variety of grave offerings, including deer antlers and marine shell ornaments, were radiocarbon dated 1680 B.C. (maximum date) to A.D. 260 (minimum date). In addition, two distinct occupational areas, horizontally separated from the cemetery, were investigated.

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing along portions of FM 2790 near Elm Creek in southern Bexar County, Texas, in May 1988. Testing was performed to determine whether portions of the previously recorded prehistoric archaeological site of 41BX518 existed within the right-of-way near the drainage. Results of testing determined that 41BX518 existed beyond the right-of-way limits of the roadway and no subsurface deposits were identified. No further work is recommended within this portion of FM 2790 and a report of testing follows, including comments on natural soil deposits along this portion of the former …

Archaeological site 41GM23 was tested by the cultural resources staff of the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during the week of June 6,1988. The test revealed that, although the site has been disturbed by clearing and bulldozing, intact cultural deposits remained. The deposits were about 60 cm thick and contained a hearth and other evidence of prehistoric occupation. The cultural material recovered suggests that the site was occupied during the Early Ceramic and Late Archaic periods. The site is eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, and for listing as a State Archaeological …

Archaeological Testing of 41KR243, the Camp Pearl Wheat Site, was performed between June 15 and June 20, 1988 by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highway and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The hand excavation of three 2 meter squares uncovered a hearth and a Martindale dart point from depths of 40 to 50 cm below the present surface. An additional hearth exposed in the road cut of FM 783 was uncovered and documented. The site contains a San Geronimo Phase (Weir 1976) component at 40 to 50 cm depth within the proposed right-of-way. The uppermost 30 cm of the …
