Personal papers of Ray Howell, Bowling Green, Kentucky: postcards sent during his military service in World War I and bearing his image; a 1931 certificate confirming his 1919 discharge from the U.S. Army; a certified copy of his birth certificate; a postcard from California advising of a death; and Howell’s funeral instructions. Also includes the 1919 reply of another “Ray Howell,” then serving in Germany, to whom Howell’s sister Maud’s letter was sent by mistake; he also encloses a postcard bearing his image.

During one of the most tumultuous decades in the history of Switzerland, a small group of Vaudois republicans chose to secure their children’s familial, cultural and spiritual patrimony by relocating to the New World. In April 1800, at Le Chenit in the Vallée de Joux, five families framed a compact intended to organize a communal settlement in the Northwest Territory. Recently discovered, their pact is presented here in its original French and in English translation, along with an accompanying letter; additionally, another letter and an English translation of the compact as prepared by Jean Jaques Dufour in 1801 is supplied. …

Williams, Paris, Kentucky. The former U.S. senator offers to discuss the terms on which Williams is to hire out slaves for Edwards’s factory business, but declines his request to train them in cigar-making. He also reports on his law studies, his hopes for financial success, and on a recent visit to Frankfort, Kentucky, where he found state legislators to be “mere factionists,” “without intelligence, without principle, dignity, [or] virtue.”

"Model And Patriarch" Of Southern Settlements : Neighborhood House In Louisville, Kentucky, 1896-1939., Kalie Ann Gipson

This thesis explores the workings of Neighborhood House, a social settlement in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1896 to 1939. It argues that Neighborhood House represented a typical settlement house that operated during the Progressive Era in the United States. From its beginnings under its founder, Archibald A. Hill, through the tenure of Frances Ingram, Neighborhood House served as an Americanizing institution for urban, European immigrants in Louisville by offering clubs and classes to both immigrant children and adults. Neighborhood House residents also mitigated between immigrant children and parents, pushed for child labor reform, and battled vice in the area. Furthermore, this …

She writes of a possible raid on Flemingsburg, and of the fate of a party of looters in the area. She also laments the difficulties of horse travel, reports hearing of conflict over the military draft from a correspondent in Iowa, and invites a member of Lewis’s household to visit “if there are no Rebs between here & there.”

Most relates to Muir’s interest in John Rowan and his Bardstown, Kentucky home Federal Hill, and to Stephen Foster’s association with the property, thought to have been the inspiration for his song “My Old Kentucky Home.” Muir brings sources on Rowan to the attention of WKU faculty member Frances Richards, the author of a master’s thesis on Rowan. Letter, 14 December 1862, of George Messer, 107th Illinois Infantry, to his wife Lottie in Clinton, Illinois. He describes the march to camp near Munfordville, Kentucky, the layout of the camp, and nearby graves, the result of an earlier engagement. He outlines the position of other troops in the area and lists the names of several men who have deserted from his company. He makes some critical remarks about his father at home and expresses confidence in Lottie’s ability to manage his domestic affairs.
