The study advances a reinterpretation of Madison’s concept of “constitutional liquidation,” presenting it not merely as a theory of legal interpretation but as a broader political strategy for preserving republican government amid recurring crises. Through an analysis of Madison’s responses to the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, and the nullification controversy, the thesis demonstrates how Madison sought to balance constitutional stability with principled conflict, allowing fundamental questions of authority, justice, and union to be resolved through disciplined public deliberation rather than force or procedural formalism.

This project explores the New English Puritan ideology of providentialism from the first settlement of New England in 1620 to the Salem Village witch trials in 1692. During this period New England watched its motherland experience civil war, the overthrow of the monarchy, the installation of a commonwealth, the failure of the Puritan Reformation, the restoration of the monarchy, and the Glorious Revolution. These events influenced the way New Englanders saw England’s relationship with God as well as the meaning behind their providential purpose by allowing them to believe God had turned his wrath on England, so the colonists needed …

Retention Strategies: A Mixed Methods Research Study On Factors That Motivated Black Educators To Stay And Teach At A K-12 School During A National Crisis, E Jean Pemberton

Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to improve retention of Black educators of K-12 schools during a national crisis. To do so, this research study investigated Black educators of K-12 schools to determine factors that motivated them to stay and teach during a national crisis. This research used Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory of Motivation- Hygiene for its theoretical framework. A convergent mixed-methods design was used to collect the qualitative and quantitative data, analyze the data separately, and then merge the data to determine the findings from this research study (Creswell, 2018). When WWII began, these Nisei-led groups collaborated with the War Relocation Authority (WRA), which created a narrative of Japanese American compliance. The Armed Occupation Act of 1842 (AOA) remains important to Florida's environmental history because it brought a stalwart band of white pioneers to take advantage of 200,000 acres of relatively untouched wilderness south of Gainesville. The basic tenants of the Act called for heads of households to bear arms against Seminoles, bestowed 160 acres of land to those who farmed at least five acres as well as constructed a domicile, and so succeeded in attracting new migrants that Florida achieved statehood three years later in 1845. The Act was effective in boosting the population-at least in giving Florida the 60,000 …

On December 2, 1922, a Georgia-bound train was departing from the depot at Perry, Florida, when the crew discovered the body of a young girl lying in the tall grass beside the track. Halting the train, they inspected the body to find that the woman was "brutally beaten with some blunt instrument and her throat cut in such a horrible manner that death must have been instantaneous." Blood pooled around her body, and there were clear signs of a struggle. The crew immediately returned to the depot where they alerted the local authorities.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the secular priest from Jerez de la Frontera who sailed across the Atlantic with Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565, can truly be considered one of the "founding fathers" of Florida. Apart from being a key figure in Menendez' expedition, he served as the first vicar of St. Augustine and San Mateo, helped establish the first permanent mission in the United States, and, as Michael Gannon reminds us, celebrated "the first mass in America's first city." Florida has long been an amalgam of cultures and peoples, only magnifying in its diversity with the rapid and continued population growth since the mid-twentieth century. As a result, the state has garnered an extensive history of varying cultures and groups that have transformed its history and identity. Within these movements stand individuals whose lives and ideals can best represent their groups as a whole. The life of Joseph Velezdy, a seemingly innocuous Central Florida retiree, is one such example. Thinking back to his days ofgrowing up in Jacksonville in the late nineteenth century, James Weldon Johnson recalled that "[l]ong after the close of the Reconstruction period Jacksonville was known far and wide as a good town for Negroes." Johnson, an African American lawyer and educator who became a writer in the Harlem Renaissance, remembered that "[w]hen I was growing up, most of the city policemen were Negroes; several members of the city council were Negroes; one or two justices of the peace were Negroes." A common metric in confirming a state's Southern identity is its commitment to white supremacy, what U.B. Phillips argued was the "central theme of Southern history." Florida was the third state to secede on January 10, 1861; white lawmakers readily enacted Jim Crow segregation and disenfranchised African Americans after Reconstruction; and, from 1877 to 1950, Florida ranked first in the southeast in lynchings per capita. The Floridian commitment to white supremacy was endemic in the state's constitution of 1865 and in the "Black Codes" passed early during Reconstruction, making Florida's first postwar government one of the harshest and most reactionary …

The study of hurricanes and their effects on human society is a relatively new endeavor for academic historians. No published historiographic essay or article exists save a brief section in Stuart B. Schwartz's 2005 article "Hurricanes and the Shaping of the Circum-Caribbean Societies." This is due to the fact that hurricanes are traditionally analyzed in scientific ways that focus on veracity, storm track, wind speed, and storm surge. With the increasing scholarship in the field ofenvironmental history over the past thirty years, more historians now examine how hurricanes significantly impact human communities.
