Tacatacuru And The San Pedro De Mocamo Mission, Jerald T. Milanich
Florida Historical Quarterly
Dr. William R. Bullard of the Florida State Museum and this author made an archeological survey of Cumberland Island, Georgia, in June 1970, primarily to locate prehistoric Indian village sites. An extensive shell midden area displaying Spanish and historic Indian ceramics was found, and a preliminary surface collection was made. In the next several weeks more samples of surface material were secured, and from these artifacts and from physical characteristics of the site, information regarding the historic and proto-historic aboriginal occupations of the island can be derived. It seems likely that this was the site of the Timucuan village of …
John Bull's Stinginess In East Florida, Claude C. Sturgill
John Bull's Stinginess In East Florida, Claude C. Sturgill
Florida Historical Quarterly
There is no doubt that in the British imperial heaven the scheme of things after 1763 called for the Floridas to become to the American South what Lake George and Quebec were to the American North. A brief study of British regiments in St. Augustine in the eighteenth century demonstrates how military units were assigned to East Florida. Unfortunately the article brings into print once again, although this time through omission, what is proving to be the myth of the financial plight of the Floridas during the period of English occupation. Professor Charles Loch Mowat’s writings also accepted the theory …

Sunday, the 24th of April dawned with horizons and sky clear and wind favorable from the NE. At 6:00 A.M. after hearing the Holy Sacrifiice of the Mass, we departed the vessel with the longboat and canoe, both armed, in which the following men went: Frigate Lieutenant Don José Jiménez; Don Fraucisco Maria Celi; Don Juan Franco, a draftsman from the navy yard by the stream;55 the carpenter and the caulker of the xebec; and fifteen seamen. All this was in expectation of drawing a chart, and of surveying the forests and pines for masts, their quality, length, and thickness. …

After the Civil War the Florida lumber industry quickly recovered and expanded until it became a major factor in the state’s economy. Yellow pine lumber and heavy timber was being shipped from Florida to domestic, European, and Latin American ports in large quantities by 1873. In that year twenty sawmills near Jacksonville employed hundreds of laborers. Lumber was surpassed only by tourism in relative importance to the city’s economy. City leaders were predicting prosperity and growth on the basis of an expanding lumber industry and tourist trade. In April, 6,660,000 superficial feet of lumber was loaded on schooners and a …
Slavetrading In Antebellum Florida, Julia F. Smith
Slavetrading In Antebellum Florida, Julia F. Smith
Florida Historical Quarterly
Much of the slave trade in Florida centered in Tallahassee, the heart of the cotton belt. New Orleans was perhaps the largest southern slave market. Negro-traders, characters looked down upon by all, purchased slaves there “from the block” at public outcry. Most of the supply for Florida planters was brought in by these traders. They came to St. Marks by ship and then on to Tallahassee to dispose of their cargoes. The blacks were kept in the public jail or in “slave pens,” special buildings designed with cells, until time of sale. The auctions were widely advertised in advance, and …

The dream of a waterway across Florida from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico long has captured the imagination. In 1595 Spanish cartographers depicted one across the peninsula, a mistake assumed correct for nearly 200 years. During the British period in Florida, the royal government conducted a survey to determine if such a route existed, and in 1788 the United States army produced a sketch map of the area, although by that time it was clear no watercourse existed. Later, Thomas Jefferson’s administration exhibited the first high-level American interest in the construction of a waterway—an interest which has …

Tampa Bay In 1757: Francisco Maria Celi's Journal And Logbook, Part 1, John D. Ware
Florida Historical Quarterly
For almost two centuries following their discovery and exploration Tampa Bay lay virtually neglected by the Spanish. Then, in 1756, for a variety of reasons, they seemed to awake to the potential of the area, and they authorized two surveys. The first, made by Juan Baptista Franco in the closing months of 1756, was but briefly recorded. Perhaps because of the brevity of this report a second survey was sought by Señor Don Lorenzo de Montalbo, comisario ordenador de marina, principal naval minister in Cuba. The mission was entrusted to Don Francisco Maria Celi, pilot of the Spanish Royal Fleet, …
Alexander Hamilton's Florida Policy, Gilbert L. Lycan
Alexander Hamilton's Florida Policy, Gilbert L. Lycan
Florida Historical Quarterly
Alexander Hamilton had a greater interest in Florida and spoke of it more often than any other prominent American of his period. While still living in the West Indies, he worked for Beckman and Cruger at Christiansed, and during a part of that time he was in charge of their commercial activities. Whenever he looked at a map of North America, which he often did in the course of his activities, he saw first of all the peninsula of Florida pointing out toward his homeland. Throughout his life Hamilton was aware of the importance of Florida in the future of …
Florida After Secession: Abandonment By The Confederacy And Its Consequences, John F. Reiger
Florida After Secession: Abandonment By The Confederacy And Its Consequences, John F. Reiger
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the early months of 1861, some Florida citizens seemed to feel that the approaching conflict would be diversion rather than tragedy. On January 12, the day after the state seceded, a detachment of Florida and Alabama troops seized the navy yard at Pensacola. They were accompanied by a jovial throng of townspeople who found the event greatly entertaining. Other Floridians believed that the government would not fight to preserve the Union, or if it did fight, that the efforts would be cowardly and short. Throughout the state, prominent men offered to drink all the blood spilt in any struggle …
Tallahassee Through The Storebooks, 1843-1863: Antebellum Cotton Prosperity, Clifton Paisley
Tallahassee Through The Storebooks, 1843-1863: Antebellum Cotton Prosperity, Clifton Paisley
Florida Historical Quarterly
Few things stirred more interest than the planting, harvesting and marketing of cotton in mid-nineteenth-century Tallahassee. In April 1849, cotton was in the ground and prospects looked bright despite a severe freeze on April 15. There was some apprehension that the unexpected cold had badly damaged and perhaps had destroyed the young plants, but these fears were quickly allayed. The freeze was even more severe in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and the damage in those areas indicated a likely increase in cotton prices from the seven or eight cents a pound of recent years. In addition to cotton, …

How To Escape The Yankees: Major Scott's Letter To His Wife At Tallahassee, March 1864, Clifton Paisley
How To Escape The Yankees: Major Scott's Letter To His Wife At Tallahassee, March 1864, Clifton Paisley
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Middle Florida cotton plantation region that centered in Tallahassee had good reason in the spring of 1864 to fear an attack by Federal forces despite the impressive Confederate victory at the Battle of Olustee on February 20. After this bloody engagement Union troops retreated to Jacksonville, and pursuing Confederates stopped twelve miles short of the city at McGirt's Creek. They dug in there, and for months there was a standoff. Florida’s long and poorly defended shoreline provided abundant other opportunities for a Federal assault, however. Middle Florida had become particularly vulnerable to an attack with the withdrawal of Confederate …

The Puritan soul of John Quincy Adams had been much mortified by the tissue of intrigue and double dealing that had surrounded his negotiations for the acquisition by his beloved United States of the Florida territory.
The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon
The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon
Florida Historical Quarterly
In September 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain sought out and attacked the Huguenot French in their Florida settlement. When his victory was won, a number of men, women, and children had become captives of the Spanish, while at least two Spaniards were prisoners in the hands of the French. Some of these people possessed noble blood; most were common sailors and soldiers. A few gained a degree of notoriety from their experiences– at least one of the captives was received at the court of Philip II of Spain, while another appeared before the Queen Mother of France. While …
The Female Protection And The Sun Light: Two Contemporary Negro Mutual Aid Societies, Bruce Ergood
The Female Protection And The Sun Light: Two Contemporary Negro Mutual Aid Societies, Bruce Ergood
Florida Historical Quarterly
Mutual Aid Societies were an integral part of the lifestyle of nineteenth-century American blacks. These precursors of contemporary insurance companies provided financial assistance to members in time of sickness and crisis and paid the burial costs of the departed member. Societies were founded in the East and throughout the South, both in rural and urban communities. Many of these societies— or burial clubs, as they are commonly called— continue to exist.
