A Florida Slave Sale, Peter D. Klingman Nov 2021

A Florida Slave Sale, Peter D. Klingman

Florida Historical Quarterly

Of all the activities connected with the system of American Negro slavery, one of the less documented and less well-known aspects is that of free Negroes who purchased and owned slaves. (Generally it is believed that the majority of free blacks who owned slaves purchased them for reasons of personal interest and involvement. There are known examples of free black husbands who bought their slave “wives” as well as instances in which the reverse took place. In other recorded cases, the slaves were the children of a free-slave “marriage.” In still others, relatives and friends similarly were rescued from the …

Rise Of The "Businessman's Politician": The 1924 Florida Gubernatorial Race, Victoria H. Mcdonell Nov 2021

Rise Of The "Businessman's Politician": The 1924 Florida Gubernatorial Race, Victoria H. Mcdonell

Florida Historical Quarterly

The 1920s in Florida reflected the enormous social and economic changes that were occurring throughout the United States. The conservatism of the period, exemplified by high tariffs, the passage of the Volstead Act, and the growth of right wing groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, performed an uneasy counterpoint to the new currents of change. Urban growth, rapid economic development, and the proliferation of transportation and communications facilities foretold the future complexion of American life, As Floridians approached the 1924 gubernatorial campaign they were faced with two alternatives: electing men who were committed to holding on to the past …

Bernard Romans- John Ellis Letters, 1772-1773, John D. Ware

Florida Historical Quarterly

John Ellis, born in Ireland about 1710, was a naturalist who Carl Linnaeus described as a “bright star of natural history” and “the main support of natural history in England.” He was a merchant in London when he was appointed as agent for the British province of West Florida, April 2, 1764, at an annual salary of 200 pounds.

That Infamous Floridian, Jesse Fish, Robert L. Gold Nov 2021

That Infamous Floridian, Jesse Fish, Robert L. Gold

Florida Historical Quarterly

The story of Jesse Fish has long been obscured by rumor, contradictory reports, and confusion. He lived more than half a century in St. Augustine under both Spanish and British authority, and his long residence probably helped in the formation of the “Fish Legend,” which has lasted until the present day. Generally, he emerges as a sinister figure, an insidious schemer characteristically involved in contraband commerce, sedition, and illicit land transactions. Fish reputedly made money as an hacendado, land dealer, slaver, smuggler, usurer, and cunning crook. His critics also accuse him of performing espionage for England and Spain, and claim …

Economic Basis Of The Seventeenth-Century Florida Missions, Robert Allen Matter Nov 2021

Economic Basis Of The Seventeenth-Century Florida Missions, Robert Allen Matter

Florida Historical Quarterly

Many Americans are familiar with the chain of Franciscan missions in Spanish California. Less well-known is the significant Franciscan mission system that flourished among the Florida Indians more than a century before the friars founded their first Upper California mission at San Diego in 1769. The Franciscans began their program in Florida in the late sixteenth century, fter the collapse in martyrdom of a relatively weak, five-year Jesuit effort. Within a hundred years the friars had forged their mission chains from the presidio at St. Augustine some 200 miles north along the Florida and Georgia coasts, to the vicinity of …

Broken Nest: Deterring China From Invading Taiwan, Jared M. Mckinney, Peter Harris

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Deterring a Chinese invasion of Taiwan without recklessly threatening a great-power war is both possible and necessary through a tailored deterrence package that goes beyond either fighting over Taiwan or abandoning it. This article joins cutting-edge understandings of deterrence with empirical evidence of Chinese strategic thinking and culture to build such a strategy.

The Grand Strategic Thought Of Colin S. Gray, Lukas Milevski Nov 2021

The Grand Strategic Thought Of Colin S. Gray, Lukas Milevski

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Colin S. Gray distinguished himself from other scholars in the field of strategic studies with his belief that grand strategy is indispensable, complex, and inherently agential. This article identifies key themes, continuities, conceptual relationships, and potential discontinuities from his decades of grand strategic thought. Gray’s statement that “all strategy is grand strategy” remains highly relevant today, emphasizing the importance of agential context in military environments—a point often neglected in strategic practice.

Sherman And His Historians: An End To The Outsized Destroyer Myth?, Mitchell G. Klingenberg Nov 2021

Sherman And His Historians: An End To The Outsized Destroyer Myth?, Mitchell G. Klingenberg

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

For years, scholars have viewed the career of William Tecumseh Sherman in light of an antiquated destroyer myth and neglected his memoirs, which were written as a military textbook. This essay reviews Sherman’s legacy and literature, both of which contributed to the advancement of modern military thought. His experiences may serve as a prescriptive text to servicemembers, providing critical lessons on military warfare and philosophy still relevant today.

Defeat Mechanisms In Modern Warfare, Frank Hoffman Nov 2021

Defeat Mechanisms In Modern Warfare, Frank Hoffman

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article explores the current debate about service and Joint operating concepts, starting with the Army’s multi-domain operations concept. It argues for adaptations to an old operational design technique—defeat mechanisms; updates to Joint and service planning doctrine; and discipline regarding emerging concepts. Rather than debate over attrition versus maneuver, combinations of a suite of defeat mechanisms should be applied to gain victory in the future.

The Air Littoral: Another Look, Maximilian K. Bremer, Kelly A. Grieco Nov 2021

The Air Littoral: Another Look, Maximilian K. Bremer, Kelly A. Grieco

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Assessing threats to the air littoral, the airspace between ground forces and high-end fighters and bombers, requires a paradigm change in American military thinking about verticality. This article explores the consequences of domain convergence, specifically for the Army and Air Force’s different concepts of control. It will assist US military and policy practitioners in conceptualizing the air littoral and in thinking more vertically about the air and land domains and the challenges of domain convergence.

The Civil War And The Transformation Of American Medicine, Benya Wilson Nov 2021

The Civil War And The Transformation Of American Medicine, Benya Wilson

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The most common historiographical narrative used to explain the transformation of American medicine during the Civil War centralizes on the brilliance of a few notable physicians, whose radical ideas, daring, and exceptional work ethic built or set precedents for standards foundational to modern medicine. However, this approach is limited and does not consider the impact of the context of war and power structures in shaping the practice of medicine. Through examining personal accounts and official documentation including, government reports, news articles, war journals, private and military correspondence, physicians and nurse’s notes, and post-war autobiographical recollections, a new understanding emerges. Civil …

“Othering” And Religion: Political Discourse Of 9/11, Emily Dawn Riley Nov 2021

“Othering” And Religion: Political Discourse Of 9/11, Emily Dawn Riley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is to understand the ways public figures discuss 9/11, religious, or racial controversy to sustain or modify national identity and the legacy it holds in American society. By examining artifacts from three well-known political figures, 43rd President George W. Bush, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and 44th President Barack Obama, I argue that politicians utilize elements of Kenneth Burke’s (1950) theory of identification and division to negotiate shared identities amongst Americans in times of heightened religious and racial controversy. Presidents and political leaders have the authority to shape and create how events, people, …
