The National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956 was a much needed piece of legislation that provided the nation an integrated interstate system while also quelling the atomic anxiety that was rampant during the early years of the atomic age. Atomic and communist anxiety was the lynchpin that allowed for interstate legislation to garner support from the American people and federal government. The connection between the interstate system and civilian defense first adopted by President Eisenhower in 1955 as a serious matter accomplished two important tasks. Herbert Block was a political cartoonist who published many cartoons particularly during the time of the Nixon administrations Watergate Scandal. These cartoons were able to show the feelings of Americans during the events of the Watergate Scandal during the 1970s. Block’s political cartoons are great tools in displaying the feelings of the American people during this time period.

Founding Monsters

The Founding Monsters comic book was created as a science-friendly graphical storytelling framework that tells the story of the Founding Fathers and their obsession with prehistoric megafauna, especially mastodons and giant ground sloths. Founding Monsters combines sequential art (e.g. comic book style) with historical and scientific data. The first mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossils were found in New York in the early 18th century. Later in the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson was sent fossils from what is now West Virginia for what were eventually identified as bones from a giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersoni). Edward A. Pollard’s The Lost Cause first appeared in 1866. Although it established the Myth of the Lost Cause, it was widely read, not as myth, but as history, especially in the South. Then, after 1900, it was largely forgotten. However, starting in the early 1970s, historians began to investigate the Myth of the Lost Cause as a myth. Pollard’s name and the title of his book finally came up again, but usually just in passing. Except for occasionally getting credit for coining the term “the Lost Cause,” his contributions and popularity remained largely ignored. The purpose of this thesis …

The advent of the American Civil War in 1861 abruptly halted the burgeoning Women’s Rights Movement of the mid-nineteenth century. The urgency of the Union war effort quickly overtook the fledgling movement. This did not eliminate women from the public sphere; rather, it pushed them into roles that would pave the way to a rekindled Women’s Rights Movement, the creation of the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869, and eventually, women’s suffrage. “’Our Women Are Made of the Right Stuff:’ Gender, Politics, and Conflict in Civil War West Virginia” examines the lives and contributions of white West Virginia women and argues that they were not merely victims of the war, but dynamic participants whose opinions were influential and whose actions determined the ability of both the Union and Confederate armies to wage war in Appalachia. Striking a balance between the antebellum standards of “True Womanhood” and the emerging ideals of the women’s rights movement, West Virginia women became politically engaged in both the statehood movement and the Civil War. Handlan Kerosene Signal Lantern, circa. 1930's-1940's. Lantern features a steel cage with the Handlan manufacturing stamp on the top and bottom of the lantern. Stamped on the brim of the lid are the initials NYCS signaling the use of this lantern by the New York Central System.

Dietz Vesta Lantern circa, 1896. There are four versions of the Dietz Vesta all with different sized globes and choices of manufacturing. This lantern is estimated to be the final type of Vesta with a 10 inch globe which was manufactured up until the 1957 when Dietz Manufacturing facilities shifted to Hong Kong for cheaper manufacturing. The red globe of this lantern which would be used to signal stop or danger is stamped NYCS for use under the New York Central System which was the largest user of the Dietz Vista.

Dietz No. 20 Junior Lantern, circa. 1989. This lantern model is one of the three major Dietz Lanterns still in production after 120 years. The Junior model is one of the most copied forms of lanterns due to its economically cheap but sturdy style. The Junior replaced the Dietz No. 1 Blizzard as the most sought after model for this reason.
