Park Trammell And The Florida Democratic Senatorial Primary Of 1916, Stephen Kerber

Florida Historical Quarterly

Of the many hardfought and bitter campaigns waged in twentieth-century Florida politics, none has surpassed in excitement or intensity the 1916 gubernatorial fight between William V. Knott and Sidney J. Catts. In addition, the passions stirred by that contest spilled over into the United States Senate race and completely dominated it. Although historians have written a good deal about Knott and Catts, they have failed to describe or explain in depth the senatorial contest between incumbent Nathan P. Bryan and Florida Governor Park M. Trammell.

The development of religious freedom and the establishment of independent churches by blacks, following the Civil War, was a momentous change in black-white social relations. Although the black churches of various denominations shared a general feeling of assertiveness and independence, the individual churches in Tallahassee, representing distinctive denominations, were not uniform in their historical origins, political orientations, or leadership styles. Following the war, black Southerners of the Methodist persuasion had several paths open to them. A sizable number cast their lot with the African Methodist Episcopal Church which made remarkable inroads in the former slaveholding states. A smaller number, about …

While Bernardo de Gálvez’s forcing the entrance of Pensacola Bay with his brigatine Galveztown during the American Revolutionary War is well known, virtually forgotten are the other Spaniards who also participated in that campaign on March 18, 1781. This is especially true of teniente de fragata (naval lieutenant) Juan Antonio de Riaño, Gálvez’s brother-in-law. For the heroism of Gálvez, King Charles III of Spain added to his coat of arms a replica of him on the deck of the Galveztown with the motto “Yo Solo” (I alone). A Cyclone Hits Miami: Carrie Nation' S Visit To "The Wicked City", Paul S. George

When Carrie Nation visited Miami in March 1908, the crusade against alcohol had already met with great success in the South and in many other areas of the country. With national Prohibition still twelve years away, more than two-thirds of the counties in the eleven states of the old Confederacy had voted in local-option elections to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages in their communities. While many counties in Florida were in the dry column, Dade remained wet. Surprisingly, Miami, county seat of Dade, had, in its brief existence, already experienced both dry and wet eras.

An important aspect of the impact of World War II on the American homefront that has not been widely examined is how the government handled the nearly 378,000 German prisoners of war who were incarcerated in this country. Their odyssey took them from the deserts of North Africa, the mountains of central Italy, and the hedgerows of Normandy to Florida-one of forty-five states in which POWs were lodged during the war and immediately afterwards. The story of the German prisoners remained until relatively recently a virtual terre incognito because of the low profile of POW operations during the war and …

The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line operated between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, for three months between January 1, 1914, and March 31, 1914. The Line is commonly recognized as the world’s first regularly-scheduled passenger and commercial freight airline. The idea for the airline originated with the Florida engineer and businessman, P. E. Fansler. It was while experimenting with speed boat racing that he became interested in flying as a way of achieving even greater speed. Moses Kirkland left St. Augustine aboard the brigantine Betsey bound for British-held Boston with a packet of letters requesting an expedition to Charleston, South Carolina, so that the southern loyalists and Indians might be saved for the crown. East Florida’s Royal Governor Patrick Tonyn’s letters were among the bundle being forwarded to General Thomas Gage. On December 17, 1775, the Continental schooner Lee captured the Betsey off the New England coast and made for an American port. The next day the intercepted East Florida letters were taken to General George Washington’s headquarters at Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they aroused considerable interest. …

"My domain begins at Jacksonville," Henry M. Flagler asserted in an invitation extended in February 1898 to President William McKinley to visit him on Florida’s east coast. Flagler’s statement contained a great measure of truth. During the 1880s, Flagler, a close friend and associate of John D. The Royal Navy offered a promising career to the younger sons of many an English county family in the eighteenth century, and when political influence could be brought to bear, prospects for rapid advancement were considerably increased. The case of John Eliot offers an interesting example of the making of a naval officer during the Seven Years War and demonstrates the heights to which family connections could raise a very young man, for Eliot’s elevation to the governorship of the colony of West Florida at the age of twenty-four far surpassed the claims of his service at sea. When Miami, Florida, was incorporated in 1896, most white residents mirrored the prevailing attitude toward blacks. Negroes, they assumed, were inferior people who represented a potential threat to the white community. This attitude resulted in the consignment of blacks to cramped quarters with inadequate municipal services, creation of a dual system of justice, and semi-official tolerance of white terrorism. The symbol and guardian of this order was the police.
