In western Florida there are many places of historic interest whose physical remains have been obliterated by the action of the elements, and the memory of man may have long since ceased to know them. Uncommonly colorful in its historical background, Ocala, the seat of justice of Marion county, held a position of unique importance among the towns of central Florida in the early days of our statehood. Among the older settlements and so situated geographically that through it must pass the pioneers pressing southward its influence was soon felt, for interwoven with its sturdy agricultural and industrial progress we find the glamour of a social life that left lasting impress upon educational and political activities throughout a large part of the State.

Lieut. John Walcott Phelps (Brig.-Gen., Vols. 1861) of Vermont, served in the Seminole War during 1837, 1838 and 1839. Following these, a score of letters will be published here written by Samuel Forry, Surgeon, U. S. A., to Lieut. Phelps from various forts in Florida during the campaigns of 1837 and 1838. The originals of both series are in the possession of John W. Phelps, of Northfield, Massachusetts, a son of General Phelps; who, through Mrs. Roy V. The settlement of the Seminole Indians in Florida has been entirely within the historical period. They were renegade Creeks (Muskokis) from Georgia, who invaded Florida following the raids made by the English under Governor Moore, of South Carolina, beginning in 1702. Moore drove the Timuquanas who inhabited the northern part of Florida (extending far southward) to the protection of the forts at St. Augustine.

We must now retrace our steps and consider the rivalry between the towns of St. Joseph and Apalachicola after the Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Railroad began business in September, 1836. While the preliminary work for the development of St. Joseph as a rival to the parent city was being so successfully carried out, the supporters of the latter place were not idle.

As a historian and coordinator of a secondary social studies licensure program, I have spent the last few months working with teachers and others to gather documentary evidence about the experience of COVID-19 in my state. I felt compelled to gather documents as a historian. Collecting written and digital materials made me think (and talk with teachers and their students) about the nature of historical documentary evidence, past and present. School Leaders Supporting Students Of Color In Predominately-White Schools, Jonathan Swan

Legal challenges to racial segregation and changes in the racial composition of many suburbs have altered the racial makeup of public schools in the United States. This phenomenological study looked at how principals in Predominately-White schools (PWS) and educator facilitators for a state desegregation program (DP) learn about the perceptions of students of color (SOC) in their schools, address negative perceptions of SOC, and attempt to support SOC; it also inquired about hindrances to their efforts to serve SOC more effectively. Thematic analysis of transcripts of interviews with five principals and four desegregation facilitators led to 10 findings. Critical Race …
