The Courts Of Territorial Florida, Charles D. Farris
The Courts Of Territorial Florida, Charles D. Farris
Florida Historical Quarterly
The organic act establishing the Territory of Florida was passed by Congress on March 30, 1822. Another act of Congress admitted Florida into the union of states on March 23, 1845. 2 Provision was made for either the appointment or the election, by October 1845, of all officers under the state government who succeeded to functions of officers under the territorial government. 3 The territorial period, therefore, may be said to have ended with the elections in October 1845.

Never before has there been an instance of the formation of a great nation like our own, in which so many different races and nationalities have taken part. The sturdy English, the thrifty Scotch, the buoyant Irish, the Spaniards, Germans, French, Italians, Dutch, Scandinavians and others are all represented in our country’s fabric, irrespective of their religious tenets or affiliations. And so it is not surprising to find that Jews were also among these pioneers. Though but few in number, they appear in every one of the original thirteen colonies throughout the colonial and revolutionary periods, and also later on …

Some Notes On An Archeological Survey For Florida, H. Dunscombe Colt
Some Notes On An Archeological Survey For Florida, H. Dunscombe Colt
Florida Historical Quarterly
In these days of increasing population and expanding communities, it is inevitable that many of the historical antiquities should disappear. The Indian mounds are not alone in this respect, for the remains of the early colonial periods are also succumbing to modern demands. In order therefore to preserve, in record at least, as much as possible for the future, a register of all existing antiquities should be compiled before it is too late.
Florida, Promoter Of Cuban Liberty, Ruby Leach Carson
Florida, Promoter Of Cuban Liberty, Ruby Leach Carson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida’s geographical peculiarities have resulted always in giving her a colorful history, and at no time has this been more evident than during the Cuban War of Independence, previous to American intervention. This period, from 1895 to 1898, has provided inspiration for many books and articles about the Cuban Juntas formed in the United States and about their filibustering enterprises. Because Florida’s ragged outline forms an arm which Uncle Sam extends into the affairs of Spanish America, it was inevitable that Cuban insurrectionists should lean heavily upon this arm after they declared their independence from Spain. An effort to assemble …

Colonial Pensacola: The British Period, Part Ii, Clinton N. Howard

After the initial difficulties which accompany any new settlement were over, Pensacola developed during the late 1760’s and early 1770’s much as did the other eighteenth century English colonial capitals in North America.
Spanish Contributions In Florida To American Culture, Verne E. Chatelain
Spanish Contributions In Florida To American Culture, Verne E. Chatelain
Florida Historical Quarterly
Among the numerous steps taken by Spain during the sixteenth century in its efforts to establish dominion over the New World, none are deserving of greater attention from the standpoint of our own national history than the founding of St. Augustine in the year 1565. The fact that this little settlement which was only one of approximately 200 Spanish towns and cities then existing in the Indies, remained a Spanish colony for nearly two centuries and was always an indispensable factor in the defensive strategy employed by Spain for safe-guarding its commerce as well as in perpetuating its control over …

The Indians who have inhabited this region belong to various groups, some of which have migrated hither in historical times (as the Shawnee). The most important are the Muskogian tribes, of which the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Natchez are members. However, we find isolated tribes belonging to the large northern and eastern groups of Iroquois and Algonquin Indians, as well as Siouan from the Great Plains, and several less important peoples who came into this area from the Ohio valley.

Florida Historical Material In Niles’ Register, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Any descriptive writing of general character by an intelligent observer a century or more ago is almost certain to contain valuable information for the historian; and this is especially true for Florida. The following account presents a view of East Florida in 1817, four years before the United States officially occupied it through cession by Spain.
The Departure Of The Spaniards And Other Groups From East Florida, 1763, Wilbur H. Siebert
The Departure Of The Spaniards And Other Groups From East Florida, 1763, Wilbur H. Siebert
Florida Historical Quarterly
The departure of the Spaniards, their dependents, and other inhabitants from East Florida when the British took over the two Floridas in 1763 began on April 12 when three schooners sailed from St. Augustine for Havana. Sixteen vessels left in August, two or more of them for Apalachee, including an English packet boat and the English sloop Hawk, one sloop left in September, a French sloop and six other vessels in October, two in November, including a French sloop, an English brigantine, an English sloop, and four other vessels in December. With one sloop on January 8, 1764 and eight …

The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
Florida Historical Quarterly
Many varied types of organizations, generally spoken of as the militia, came into existence during the Seminole wars in Florida. They ranged from ephemeral units, organized for a particular purpose and at a particular time which were disbanded after a retaliatory attack had been made on the Indians, or the raiding Indians had been dispersed to the fairly well organized military unit, mobilized under the authority of the territorial and national governments and attached to the Federal army.
Colonial Pensacola: The British Period. Part I, Clinton N. Howard
Colonial Pensacola: The British Period. Part I, Clinton N. Howard
Florida Historical Quarterly
Pensacola came to Great Britain as a part of the cessions of Spain at the close of the Seven Years war. The treaty of Paris which closed that war and incorporated the cession of Pensacola and all of Florida in its provisions was a turning point in the history of the British empire and of North America. The counterpart of the cession of Florida to Britain and the return of Havana to Spain was the cession of eastern Louisiana by France to Britain; and the relative value of the interior of the North American continent as compared with the Caribbean, …
The Yellow Fever Epidemic Of 1888 In Jacksonville, Margaret C. Fairlie
The Yellow Fever Epidemic Of 1888 In Jacksonville, Margaret C. Fairlie
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first of the four thousand six hundred fifty-six cases of yellow fever recorded in Jacksonville in the summer and fall of 1888 was that of R. D. McCormick who had lately come from Tampa and who was reported ill on July 28. Though this caused some alarm, the assurance of the Board of Health that it was a sporadic case seemed to calm all fears.
