It has been said that the defiant patriotism of John Quincy Adams secured to the United States possession of Florida. It settled, after years of controversy, the long standing differences between Spain and this country. The student of history who takes the trouble to search for details of the many transactions and negotiations that resulted in the Florida provinces coming under the American flag will find that the skillful diplomacy of Adams resulted in settling for all time the sovereignty of Spain on the North American Continent.

The high historical importance of this address lies in that ten years later John C. McGehee was elected (by a vote of five to one over several worthy opponents) president of the convention of the people of Florida, convened January 3, 1861, which passed the ordinance of secession. At such a time of stress and strong feeling it would seem that a man must be elected to that position at least as much because of his known opinions and long-held beliefs as for his ability and all other reasons.

While at Campeachy, (1827-1838), where he served as United States consul, Dr. Henry Perrine, a native of New York City and a physician and botanist, determined to devote the remainder of his life to introducing and endeavoring to acclimatize useful tropical plants in semi-tropical Florida. He studied the matter and made collections of plants and seeds. One of the neglected phases of American history is the development of election laws in the different states. Several monographs have been written showing the evolution and progress of certain reforms, such as the introduction of the Australian ballot, in the country as a whole, but these are usually not explicit and often not reliable regarding the subject in individual states. Articles and monographs on elections in each state are needed. It is entirely true that to obtain an accurate view of this subject the final monograph must contain a survey of the record of development in all states, but …

These documents are of great historical value, for, so far as known, none are of record, nor have any been published heretofore. The originals have been preserved in the family of John C. McGehee, president of the Florida secession convention. They are now in the possession of his niece, Rosa Galphin, of Fernandina, a student at the Florida State College for Women, Tallahassee. A sketch of Judge McGehee follows, written by Miss Galphin.

After Drake burned the fort at St. Augustine in 1586, the settlers gave the name of San Marcos to the wooden building which took its place - Fort Number Seven. They had long wanted and asked for a fort of stone, and it would seem as if the discovery of coquina by Pedro Menendez Marques, in 1580, should have helped to bring about the realization of their wishes; but always, something came up to prevent it.

This is a better title for a story of the disturbance that occurred in Florida in 1812 than the one usually given to it, viz: The Patriot War. The so-called patriots were nearly all citizens of the United States from Georgia and Tennessee. They were supported by soldiers and gunboats of the United States. They were under the orders of an agent of the United States and were financed, by the United States. That the events did not provoke a real war between Spain and this country is only explained by the fact that Spain had been drained of men …
