Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Between December 18 and 21, 2018, an intensive archeological survey was completed in order to inventory and evaluate archeological resources within the footprint of the proposed FM 2493 roadway improvements from U.S. Highway 69 to Farm-to-Market 346 in Smith and Cherokee Counties, Texas. The project is identified under Texas Department of Transportation control-section-job numbers 0191- 03-083, 0191-04-008, and 0191-02-066. The work associated with this archeological survey was carried out under Texas Antiquities Permit 8567 by Brett Lang (Project Archeologist) and Floyd Kent of Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting, Inc., a subcontractor to RPS Group.

No archeological sites were recorded during the survey. …

The proposed project pertains to the construction of a 4.9-mile (9.6 acre) trail system within the Dallas Floodway from the Sylvan Avenue/Wycliff Avenue bridge to the Campion Trail within Trinity View Park. GTI Environmental, LLC (GTI) conducted an intensive archeology survey within the Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 146’s (FBCMUD-146) proposed Long Meadow Farm Oyster Creek Trails Project (Project). The Project is being funded by Federal Highway Administration (FHA) National Recreational Trails Fund Program administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Accordingly, the Project is complying with the Antiquities Code of Texas (13TAC26) and the National Historic Preservation Act (36CFR800). The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recommended relocation of 41FB310, 41FB312, 41FB313, and 41FB314 within and adjacent to the Project area and determine an avoidance plan, if warranted. North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is proposing to construct the Lower Bois d’Arc Creek Reservoir in northeast Fannin County, Texas. Due to the proposed inundation, nine bridge/culvert locations will be inundated, and new bridges/culverts will be constructed. White Hawk, which is handling the engineering for the project, contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to evaluate the proposed bridge locations to determine if significant cultural resources are within the study areas. Prior to and during the cultural resources survey, it was thought that 11 locations would be impacted and 11 were surveyed. After the survey was complete, it was determined that …

On July 3 and 5, 2019, an intensive archeological survey was completed in order to evaluate potential impacts associated with the proposed construction of a residential subdivision in the Town of Providence Village in east-central Denton County, Texas. A total of 162.64 acres (65.81 hectares) were examined with 65.39 acres (26.46 hectares) intensively shovel tested. The project would be situated between Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Pecan Creek at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Brewer Road with private properties as the north and south boundaries.

Liberty Multifamily, LLC is proposing to develop approximately 12 acres of a 22-acre tract east of FM2931, approximately 0.4 miles north of its intersection with Ike Byrom Road in Denton County, Texas. Liberty Multifamily, LLC contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to conduct an intensive cultural resources survey of the 12 acres slated for development. Archaeological survey of the tract was conducted on July 17-18, 2019. Based on the research conducted prior to the survey, two hypotheses were developed. This article is intended to provide an overview of significant historical influences affecting American Indian education and to identify encouraging emerging trends in American Indian education in the Northwest. An overview of historically significant approaches to federal American Indian education is discussed. Specific examples of encouraging trends in increased tribal involvement observed in federal Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) and Northwest public school districts are provided. Examples include educational partnerships with the Navajo Nation as well as Northwest tribes such as the Lummi Nation, Spokane Indian Tribe, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

When President Lincoln won the election in 1860, secession was inevitable and war a likely possibility. This project studies the use of mental hygiene films in the 1950s to understand the American ideal of gender, sex roles, and mental health. Focusing specifically on masculinity, this project shows that psychologists and psychiatrists of the mid-twentieth century helped to define what it meant to be a real man in America. Sources for this research included mental hygiene films, psychological studies and articles from the 1950s, and news broadcasts. Upon examination of these sources, it becomes clear that mental health specialists were concerned with the development of correct masculinity in male children and becoming the modern doctors that could …

On November 10, 1898 the city of Wilmington erupted in racial violence as the members of the white population massacred anywhere from twenty-five to a hundred of the black citizenry. The result of the Wilmington Race Riot was the reassertion of white supremacy in North Carolina and a flip in Wilmington’s population, as whites became the majority. Imagining Revolutionary Feminism: Communist Asia And The Women Of The Black Panther Party, Benjamin Young

Research & Publications

Using newspapers, autobiographies, and interviews, this article examines the ways in which women of the Black Panther Party imagined the women of Vietnam, China, and North Korea as radical archetypes during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Using Judy Wu’s theory of “radical orientalism” in conversation with Ashley Farmer’s concept of the “gendered imaginary,” I argue that the Panther women imagined the women of “the East” as pioneers in world revolution and women’s liberation in order to protest against gendered injustices within the Party and broader U.S. society. In the fall of 1952, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson II faced off in a heated Presidential Election. The reputations of the two men followed them throughout the campaign cycle. Eisenhower was perceived as the General who defeated the Germans on the European front of WWII and was also skilled in managing the press. Stevenson was a relative unknown on the national stage, but was perceived as an intellectual who helped to reform the State Government of Illinois, becoming a favorite candidate of the Democratic Party. During the antebellum period, Illinois proved to be problematic for the North. Geographically, it is a Northern State. Population wise, it was split between Northern and Southern tradition. Around the Chicago area, abolitionism had a strong pull as expressed by the various colored conventions held there, as well as the variety of Whig/Republican newspapers. From the state capital of Springfield and further south, many people held Democratic view points and could sympathize with their Southern neighbors. Ethel Weed (1906-1975) was one of the few American women who devised and implemented U.S. foreign policy during the U.S. occupation of Japan from 1945-1952. As Chief Women's Information Officer she was in charge of all initiatives aimed at the "democratization" Japanese women. While previous works on Ethel Weed have examined her public persona, this article turns to her private thoughts by examining letters that Weed wrote home during her time in Japan. These letters show that Weed drew great inspiration from the Japanese women with whom she worked during the occupation. As this article contends that Weed was awed …
