The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

In 1862, the small Virginian town of Fredericksburg found itself between two opposing armies. The Federal Army of the Potomac sat restlessly, eagerly awaiting means with which to cross the Rappahannock River, while elements of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia were called to take defensive positions in and behind Fredericksburg. What ensued was a bloody spectacle that claimed thousands of lives, and tempered the fighting spirit of the armies for the remainder of the Civil War.

Writing from Louisville, Kentucky, where intestinal illness has delayed his travel, he describes his treatment with brandy, mustard seed poultices, and morphine. He also mentions seeing “our cousins” in New Albany, Indiana, and the determination of the Southern Methodist Convention, then meeting in Louisville, to “separate from the free states.”

After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 by Congress, thousands of Native Americans were moved from their homelands in the Southeast to lands west of the Mississippi River. Along their long and difficult journey across the country, many white Americans profited from the process. After Arkansas was granted statehood on June 15, 1836, the General Assembly passed legislation that established the Arkansas State Bank and the Real Estate Bank of Arkansas. The Willis family correspondence (the bulk of the collection) is almost exclusively amongst females, so housekeeping, sewing, fashion, family matters are discussed frequently. Frank Willis, the family patriarch, does discuss farming with his daughters. Many of the letters are addressed to his wife, Laura (Edmunds) Willis, and a majority of those are from her daughters.

Soldiers have been affected by PTSD for as long as war has existed. The American Military in the twentieth century is no exception. PTSD did not become a diagnosable disease until 1980, and before then it was misdiagnosed as different anxiety disorders and neuroses. Symptoms, treatment options, and long-term affects of PTSD are also discussed. Though other other wars in which America was involved are mentioned, those that receive a more thorough analysis are World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study’s controlling question is to determine the extent millennialism as an intellectual movement informed the thinking of Colonial America. The evidence gathered suggests a kind of smorgasbord with no uniform thought. What can be deduced from the literature, however, is the fluidity of millennialism and its ability to adapt and contort to the political ideology of the era. Moreover, millennialism provided a sense of purpose for the American continent with the Great Awakening serving as the legitimizing movement which both popularized and diffused the millennium. The purpose of this paper was to discover whether slavery in Massachusetts was distinct from that institution in the South. Slavery in this colony was an admixture of servitude and bondage due to several factors. Massachusetts physical environment, climate, and township system precluded the implementation of plantation type slavery. Secondly, Puritan ideas about the family and education resulted in slaves living with and becoming a part of the families they served, as well as receiving a rudimentary education in religious, academic, and occupational fields. This paper explores the history of New Netherland in light of the Dutch struggle for identity during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Dutch originally belonged to the Holy Roman Empire as a Spanish territory, and were staunchly Catholic. However, with the coming of the Protestant Reformation, things began to change. With the Reformation came a revolution against their rulers, and also a religious diversity previously unheard of in Europe.
