While most don’t immediately associate religion with war, there is no doubt that it plays a role in most, the Civil War included. The Civil War brought with it new levels of death and destruction that the government was unprepared to deal with; it didn’t have the resources to adequately care for the influx of wounded soldiers, which was painfully evident after Bull Run when the number of soldiers needing medical care was more than the hospitals could handle. This study is a multi-faceted examination of the historiographical representation of Jews in the American South using one family’s story to guide the historical analysis. With roots in the Austrian province Galicia, Adolph and Saul Bertig’s story challenges notions and erroneous historical claims regarding American Jewry’s national origins and identities. The narrative thus provides a more nuanced understanding of the historical circumstances central to many Jews’ decisions to migrate and stay in the United States. Jewish transplants into the predominantly Protestant culture of Northeast Arkansas, the Bertig brothers were key players in Greene County, Arkansas’s development and amassed a fortune …

Intellectual Diversity In Revolutionary America: Anarchism, Feminism, Abolitionism, And Classicism Surrounding The Early National Period (1750-1800), Zachary W. Deibel

Student Theses and Dissertations

Early American political ideology centered not simply on concepts of Enlightenment rationalism, neoclassicism, Protestantism, or English common law. Instead, the formation of American government reflected a mixture of many ideologies as part of a grand intellectual experiment. This was neither an exceptional innovation nor the product of a single philosophical heritage. Ultimately, an examination of the revolutionary and constitutional periods’ intellectual characters yields a diverse, multifaceted ideology of political structure and responsibility. Specifically, the presence of anarchist, feminist, abolitionist, and classical realist ideology in the nation’s formative decades reveal the truly diverse intellectual arena in which the founders engaged. In her memoir Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, Sarah Emma Edmonds, a woman fighting in the Union Army disguised as a man, employed florid diction and a subtle romantic flare to illustrate an emotional and confounding moment in the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam: discovering another woman undercover. Edmonds writes of the “pale, sweet face of a youthful soldier,” of a boy trembling from blood loss who, she knew, had only a few more minutes on earth. [Excerpt] "Because I teach constitutional law, a friend recently asked me whether Judge Merrick Garland or President Obama might successfully sue to compel the Senate to take action on the nomination of Judge Garland to fill the vacancy on the United States Supreme Court.

Almost certainly not, I told him. Under settled precedent, a judge would dismiss such a case as raising a non-legal ''political" question. It would be very difficult to develop acceptable decisional standards for such a claim. Moreover, courts are reluctant to entertain lawsuits challenging mechanisms that the Senate uses to oversee the judiciary."

75th Anniversary of NROTC at Holy Cross

This historical overview of the Naval ROTC Unit at the College of the Holy Cross was prepared for the 75th anniversary of the Unit's establishment in 1941. It summarizes three distinct eras and calls attention to transition points in the Unit’s history: the Vietnam War crisis in 1970 and 1971, the introduction of women to the Unit, the transition from a Holy Cross-only Unit to one based on the Worcester Consortium for Higher Education, the Peace Dividend years of the 1990s, the role of the Marine Officer Instructor, and the value of a liberal arts education.

A few weeks ago one of our readers posted a comment on one of our blog posts asking for a “best guess” as to when slavery would have ended in the South had the Confederacy been successful in winning its independence. There is, of course, no easy answer to this question, as counter-factual history is just that: not factual. However, the question is an important one that deserves attention and at the very least can be used to explore some ways in which slavery can be contextualized in the Civil War era.
