All The News That’S Fit To Sing: Phil Ochs, Vietnam, And The National Press, Thomas C. Waters
All The News That’S Fit To Sing: Phil Ochs, Vietnam, And The National Press, Thomas C. Waters
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Though a prolific topical musician and a prominent figure of the antiwar movement during the 1960s, Phil Ochs remains relatively understudied by scholars due to the lure of more commercially successful folk artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. His music facilitated awareness of pressing, and sometimes controversial, issues that would otherwise have not been discussed. Focusing on Ochs’ most musically productive years from 1964 until 1968, which coincide with the years of increased American involvement in Southeast Asia, this thesis analyzes Ochs in a way that has not been attempted before. It places his anti-Vietnam War songs in …
Die Schlacht Am Little Bighorn Und Ihre Physischen Zeugnisse: Eine Frage Der Interpretation (1. Teil), Albert Winkler
Die Schlacht Am Little Bighorn Und Ihre Physischen Zeugnisse: Eine Frage Der Interpretation (1. Teil), Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
Over a thousand shell casings and bullets have been found at the location of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. These artifacts have led to many interpretations on the nature of the battle, but there are many problems with these theories. Many of the artifacts are suspect because some of them could have been moved, introduced later, or may not be a representative sample. Any analysis made on the bases of the remaining shell casings and bullets must be made with these limitations in mind.

New Perspectives On The Northampton Communion Controversy Iv: Experience Mayhew’S Dissertation On Edwards’S Humble Inquiry, Douglas L. Winiarski
New Perspectives On The Northampton Communion Controversy Iv: Experience Mayhew’S Dissertation On Edwards’S Humble Inquiry, Douglas L. Winiarski
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This fourth installment in a series exploring newly discovered manuscripts relating to the “Qualifications Controversy” that drove Edwards from his Northampton pastorate presents an unpublished oppositional dissertation by Experience Mayhew, a prominent eighteenth-century Indian missionary from Martha’s Vineyard. Next to Solomon Stoddard, Mayhew was Edwards’s most important theological target during the conflict. Where Edwards pressed toward precision in defining the qualifications for admission to the Lord’s Supper, Mayhew remained convinced that the standards for membership in New England’s Congregational churches should encompass a broad range of knowledge and experience. His rejoinder to Edwards’s Humble Inquiry provides a rare opportunity to …
A Model For Empowerment: Lugenia Burns Hope’S Community Vision Through The Neighborhood Union, Madeleine Pierson
A Model For Empowerment: Lugenia Burns Hope’S Community Vision Through The Neighborhood Union, Madeleine Pierson
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the work of reformer Lugenia Burns Hope and her community organization, the Neighborhood Union, as a case study to unpack scholarly characterizations of black elite uplift strategies during the early 20th century. The Neighborhood Union was established in 1908 in Atlanta by Hope and women from the community to build stronger neighborhoods and to combat the deleterious effects of the 1906 Race Riots and Jim Crow laws. Neighborhood Union settlement houses provided basic and extracurricular services, including kindergartens for working mothers, vocational classes, and lecture series. The organization’s exceptional, multi-class leadership structure enabled members of the …
'We Live In The Midst Of Death': Medical Theory, Public Health, And The 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic, Alyssa A. Peterson
'We Live In The Midst Of Death': Medical Theory, Public Health, And The 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic, Alyssa A. Peterson
Masters Theses
Much has been written on the history of disease in early America, especially surrounding the 1793 yellow fever epidemic that ravaged Philadelphia. The stories of the men and women who lived through and were affected by it, including the physicians who treated the victims, have been thoroughly covered by historians. What has yet to be discussed is the medical context in which this epidemic existed. Medical education, scientific thought, and particularly past experiences came together during this outbreak to influence both the medical establishment and governments’ decisions regarding their appropriate response. Doctors’ medical education predisposed them to beliefs and preferred …

The Cleveland Jewish Society Book: Vol. Iii, 1919, The Jewish Independent Publishing Co.
Cleveland Memory
The Cleveland Jewish Society Books were published from 1915 to 1925 by the Jewish Independent Publishing Company, a locally owned publisher that published the weekly Jewish Independent. The books were similar in appearance to the Cleveland Blue Book, a guide for society’s elite. The listings in the Cleveland book listed individuals by country club. The Jewish books list individuals by congregations. In many cases there are separate lists of the congregations’ ladies auxiliary, along with information on social service agencies. The book also included advertisements.
Expansion And Exclusion: A Case Study Of Gentrification In Church Hill, Kathryn S. Parkhurst
Expansion And Exclusion: A Case Study Of Gentrification In Church Hill, Kathryn S. Parkhurst
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the gentrification process in Church Hill, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia. After World War II, Richmond residents knew Church Hill mostly for its crime rate and dilapidated housing. The white, middle-class flight to the suburbs left the remaining residents, mostly African American, to experience decades of disinvestment. Church Hill was considered a neighborhood to avoid for much of the late twentieth century. Yet, Church Hill is currently one of the most desired neighborhoods in Richmond, particularly for young professionals. This thesis seeks to explain the reasons why there has been such a dramatic change …
Political Entities: Churches And Taverns In Revolutionary Virginia, 1765-1780, Ashley Gilbert
Political Entities: Churches And Taverns In Revolutionary Virginia, 1765-1780, Ashley Gilbert
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how churches and taverns became sites for political discussion and organizing during the Revolutionary era, 1765-1780. Taverns had long served a role in Virginians’ lives by providing places where news was exchanged and discussed, but with the political upheaval between the colonies and Great Britain many of the activities and discussions that took place there became far more politically charged. Analyzing churches and their role within the revolutionary era demonstrates that Virginia’s revolutionary leaders used an institution deeply rooted in their society to further political activism by Virginians and Virginia’s provisional government. But in several ways the …

Supplanting The Saloon Evil And Other Loafing Habits: Utah’S Library-Gymnasium Movement, 1907-1912., Suzanne Marie Stauffer
Faculty Publications
In 1907, the Utah State Legislature created the Library-Gymnasium Commission; by 1909, 8 cities had approved a tax, with 18 others in the preliminary stages. The movement was intended to counteract delinquency among young unemployed males on the theory that they would be attracted to the gymnasium and eventually the library, where they would be influenced by the moral and socially improving materials found there. However, none of the cities ever built a structure to house both a library and gymnasium. The commission was abolished in 1911. Factors that played a role in the movement’s trajectory are the social construction …

Lost In The Atlantic: Emotional History In New England Maritime Societies, 1745 To 1815, Lauren Leigh Percy
Lost In The Atlantic: Emotional History In New England Maritime Societies, 1745 To 1815, Lauren Leigh Percy
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study investigates the known successes and and failures of New England seamen, second-hand poetry about women on land and men at sea, personal narratives of family members ashore, and the deeply intimate writings of men on sailing ships. Through official documentation and the productions of literary circles, it is possible to determine the relationship between the external and intrinsic motivations of men and their families to go to sea and stay at sea. Life in seafaring communities intensified human experiences. Familial separation and loss has universally emanated grief in seafaring traditions. The New England maritime narrative is a story …
Silent Protest And The Art Of Paper Folding: The Golden Venture Paper Sculptures At The Museum Of Chinese In America, Sandra Cheng
Silent Protest And The Art Of Paper Folding: The Golden Venture Paper Sculptures At The Museum Of Chinese In America, Sandra Cheng
Publications and Research
Housed in the Museum of Chinese in America is the Fly to Freedom collection of paper art, which were produced by a traditional folk method of Chinese paper folding. The 123 paper works were created by detainees of the Golden Venture, a freighter used to smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S. On the evening of June 6, 1993, the ship ran aground off the Rockaways in New York City and nearly 300 migrants, gaunt from the four-month ordeal at sea, poured out of the cramped windowless hold of the vessel. Several drowned that night, a few escaped, but the majority …

Olympic Bids, Professional Sports, And Urban Politics: Four Decades Of Stadium Planning In Detroit, 1936-1975, Jeffrey R. Wing
Dissertations
Between 1936 and 1975, political and business leaders in Detroit tried to gain support for the financing and construction of a municipal stadium. The stadium plan originated as part of an attempt to bring the Summer Olympics to the city. The municipal stadium was to serve as the main Olympic stadium and be used for a variety of events after the Olympics were finished. Later, after Detroit leaders gave up on the Olympics after several failed bids, the stadium plan evolved into a domed facility on the downtown riverfront for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, the city’s professional baseball …
