Understanding The Civil War, Charles O. Boyd
Understanding The Civil War, Charles O. Boyd
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper examines why the American Civil War took place and what the modern significance of the conflict is. The paper demonstrates that slavery was indeed the main cause of Southern secession and debunks, one by one, the arguments against that view. It also argues that modern day tributes to the Confederacy are offensive and that the Civil War should be understood as part of a long struggle in the United States for equal rights.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Today is a special day, a momentous day. It's a day I've thought about for a long time. A day for beginnings and a day for looking back. So I'm looking back for today's blog, to one of my favorite posts. It's simple and meaningful to me. It's about a place that has changed my life so much. And today the ripples from that place are changing it again. And it's wonderful. [excerpt]

Patriot, Pet, And Pest: America Debates The Dog's Worth During World War I, Alison G. Laurence
Patriot, Pet, And Pest: America Debates The Dog's Worth During World War I, Alison G. Laurence
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
During World War I, dogs held a contradictory place in American society. These animals functioned simultaneously as patriots, pets, and pests. This essay surveys the ways in which dogs either contributed to the war effort or seemed to subvert it through their uselessness as companion animals and their predation as feral ones. Ultimately, even worsening conditions on the homefront could not cause the American public as a whole to consider surrendering its affection for these animals, including the worthless ones. In the face of impending legislation that threatened to eliminate man’s best friend as a war measure, the American people …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Lee is formulating his plan to move northward, to invade Federal territory once again and lean on the United States' popular will to fight. And War will see the fruits of that decision. He'll see it all. And we're still working to tell his tale, bit by bit. [excerpt]

Sockdologizing: Finally Laughing At The Lincoln Assassination, John M. Rudy
Sockdologizing: Finally Laughing At The Lincoln Assassination, John M. Rudy
Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
I've taken solace in the fact that Abraham Lincoln died laughing. Sarah Vowell, in her riveting and powerful Assassination Vacation, speaks about how, "it is a comfort of sorts to know that the bullet hit Lincoln mid-guffaw. Considering how the war had weighed on him, at least his last conscious moment was a hoot." [excerpt]

Paul M. Warburg: Founder Of The United States Federal Reserve, Richard A. Naclerio
History Faculty Publications
The name Paul Moritz Warburg is synonymous with the founding of the Federal Reserve System. Over the years preceding the formation of the Federal Reserve, Warburg wrote many essays and gave many public addresses on banking reform. His reform ideas were modeled on the central banking systems of many European counties he dealt with through the family business M.M. Warburg.

Wild And Wonderful: Stories And Stereotypes Of 19th Through 21st Century West Virginia And Appalachia, Rachel Puelle
Honors Scholar Theses
The history of West Virginia is full of stories of surviving in the beautiful but challenging terrain, and of individuals who are innovative, courageous, and independent. But, beyond this positive image of the mountaineer lie many negative stereotypes prolonged by outsiders of the region. Industrialists and corporations eager to exploit the area’s natural resources (from timber to coal to natural gas) have over the years encountered locals who are not willing to change how they live just to maximize company profits. Popular representation have characterized the land and people of Appalachia and West Virginia as backward, lazy, and not quite …

Public School Desegregation In America: How School Desegregation Became The Most Important Medium For Advancing Social Justice., Michael Huening
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this work is to identify the particular changes in the movement for social justice for African Americans. Great strides in the advancement of social justice began just after the Second World War. Issues of ideology, foreign policy, advancement in education, and growing activism led to what is known as the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement was a determined effort by African Americans and their supporters to eliminate legal and societal oppression. Measured by the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Act of 1965, and the equal opportunity employment section of Lyndon …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
It's finals week at Gettysburg College, but in another time, it was just the beginning of the oddest session of college just over 100 students would ever experience. Some would join the 26th PEMR, some would run home from the oncoming rebel hordes, and others would remain in Gettysburg, sitting in the cross-hairs of the war as the slowly rested on Adams County. From 1849 to 1850, Calista Cummings edited and published Akron's first literary magazine, The Akron Offering. At the time, Akron was a booming canal town on the verge of even greater prosperity. By turns religious, comic, romantic, and political, this extraordinary collection of early midwestern creative literature expresses a wide range of sometimes contradictory opinions on both the important questions of its day and the important questions of today: historical events such as the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the 1848 revolutions in Europe are considered alongside more timeless contemplations on truth, justice, and …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
I teased this project a short while ago, and now that May has arrived history has begun coming back to life. Over the next three months, the men and women who walked Gettysburg's streets and crossed the Pennsylvania College campus will reenact their lives in the last few moments before Gettysburg changed irrevocably. As May creeps along, more characters will rise from the grave and begin reliving the past. [excerpt]
