Poe, a Warren County, Kentucky native, who later lived in Colorado and Washington Territory, from his family in Kentucky. They write of crops, weather, and their health. They also ask Jim to lead a sober life and consider returning home. Evidently Poe went west after a run-in with the law concerning the making of illegal alcohol. Also, data related to the collection.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2764. Letters of Herbert C. Thorpe, General Manager and Assistant Treasurer, United States Gas, Coal, and Coke Company, to his wife and father. Writing from Sturgis and Paducah soon after his arrival in Kentucky from New Jersey, Thorpe describes the stresses of his new management responsibilities and the challenges to the company in the event of a miners’ strike, and criticizes the work ethic of the miners. Thorpe died in Paducah of typhoid fever on 31 July 1904.

I was born roughly 12 years after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his momentous "I Have a Dream" speech. My generation, raised on the first wave of hip-hop music and odes to Malcolm X, was angry with King. We thought his overtures to interracial cooperation were a mid-20th-century brand of "Uncle Tom-ing," what my mother's generation called "shuffling." We found it difficult to reconcile King's dream with the rise of crack cocaine, urban blight and black incarceration.

Letter written 7 April 1851 by “Will,” Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Lydia Amanda Boadley (he calls her “Sis”, but he was in fact a beau). He refers to a rival for her affections and consoles her on the death of a schoolmate. He also mentions seeing the singer Jenny Lind, who “took tea” as she passed through Bowling Green after a performance in Franklin, Kentucky, and pronounces her “not pretty.”

The 4 April, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The natural violence and chaos has been researched briefly thanks to Dr. King scholars and Clay Risen. The effects on Arkansas are virtually unknown. One prominent moment that is remembered was the memorial service on the Arkansas State Capitol steps with Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Compared to parts of the nation, Arkansas was relatively calm in the aftermath of the assassination. Even though there were numerous shootings and fires set around the state there were no deaths in Arkansas, but over two dozen arrests were made. The …
