Back at the beginning of the summer, I was asked by the College to write a piece on the history of the battle and its many resonances for what turned out to be an obscure periodical and not the actual USA Today. Doris Helen Kearns Goodwin is an American biographer, historian, former sports journalist, and political commentator. She has written biographies of several U.S. presidents, including Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream; The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga; Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln; and The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism. Goodwin's book No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1995.

Thomas Mitchell Goodknight's "Pastor's Journal" of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which includes a short biography, as well as a list of elders and deacons ordained, marriages performed, church members added, etc., during his ministry in Kentucky (particularly the C.P. church at Franklin), Kansas, and Texas. He also discusses his role as a Confederate chaplain during the Civil War.

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

One morning as he was preparing the morning paper, Boston-based Washington dispatch examiner Joseph O’Hare’s eye caught a dispatch noting the Congressional Medal of Honor was being awarded to a Lewis Horton for courageous acts while rescuing crew members of the U.S.S. Monitor off the coast of Cape Hatteras in 1862. O’Hare was particularly struck by the name of the man, since a double arm amputee veteran named Lewis Augustine Horton worked at the local customs house. Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 475. Typewritten draft, with corrections, of Donald M. Kington’s book Forgotten Summers: The Story of the Citizens’ Military Training Camps, 1921-1940. The book chronicles the one-month-long camps run every summer by the U.S. Army to give young volunteers the experience of soldiering. The book was published in 1995.
