Plimoth Plantation: Producing Historical Knowledge Through Performance, Ashley Rose

As one of the earliest living history museums, Plimoth Plantation has recently been criticized by museum and performance theorists for maintaining its reliance on first-person role playing. It has been suggested that these practices help codify the history that Plimoth represents to visitors. The Mayflower II, Hobbomock’s Homesite, and the Seventeenth Century English Village are the three distinct museum sites that Plimoth Plantation uses to help present an important period of European colonization in American history to their visitors. In the late 1820s, Irish immigrants established one of the first two ethnic neighborhoods in New Haven at Chapel and Chestnut streets near Wooster Square. Historians have considered some aspects of the impact of the war on higher education, but their work usually focuses on student experiences as soldiers or includes brief analyses of the war period in a larger institutional analysis. Their research does reinforce the unique nature, however, of circumstances at the University of Michigan, where the war period saw increases in enrollment and the expansion of curriculum.

This dissertation argues that through a secret backchannel, US National Security Adviser and later Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Soviet Ambassador to the US Anatoly Dobrynin formed a relationship which provided the empathy needed to bridge many of the ideological differences between their two countries. It examines transcripts of their telephone conversations from 1969-1977 when the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in detente, or a relaxation of tensions, during the Cold War. The dissertation concludes that the Kissinger-Dobrynin backchannel serves as a case study of the effectiveness of back channels in international diplomacy.

This paper discusses the emergence of vaudeville in California’s Inland Empire region of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. It will consider the social changes underway in late nineteenth-century America and their impact on attitudes towards popular entertainment. This paper will draw on Lawrence Levine’s observations of cultural hierarchies that emerged during the late nineteenth century and shaped American understandings of culture. Entertainment of the nineteenth century will be examined for the ways it was unable to match urban trends, and contrasted with vaudeville’s appeal to a diverse urban populace. The Anason family has its roots in Rogaland County in western Norway. The earliest known member of the Anason family came from a region of Rogaland that has since become part of Vest-Agder County, Norway.

Thormod Lovass Anason emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 and settled in Juneau County, Wisconsin. He married Herborg Olsdatter in 1876 which connected him to the Suldal Norwegian American settlement in Juneau County.

Scholars have placed their examinations of college football's larger cultural significance against the backdrop of broader venues of conflict in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Most notably, the game as an institution has been used to interpret industrialization, masculinity, and race and civil rights.
