Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Tom Lehrer, on his 1965 album That Was The Year That Was, sang a send-up of then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey with his, "Whatever Became of Hubert." The song's been going through my head this past week or so, but with the name "Herman" taking the place of LBJ's second-in-command. [excerpt]

Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes
Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes
Torrington Articles
Race, we are told, is a “social construction.” If this is so, Thomas Jefferson was its principal architect. Jefferson consciously framed his only published book, Notes on the State of Virginia, to check the rising status of Africans and to combat growing critiques of slavery from America’s European friends. Jefferson did this by importing the slaveholder’s sense of slaves as chattel into an Enlightenment world view, providing a metaphysical foundation for prejudice by transmuting the traditional Christian concept of the saved vs. the damned into material and aesthetic terms. Recasting in quasi-scientific language the ancient doctrine of the mark …

The Making Of An American Imperialist: Major Edward Austin Burke, Reconstruction New Orleans And The Road To Central America, Kathryn K. Conley
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The period of Reconstruction following the American Civil War, and its legacy, have been the subjects of long debate among historians. Scholars, though, have yet to fully explore important connections between American Reconstruction, the New South that followed, and the period of U.S. imperialism in Central America in the late nineteenth century. The storied career of Major Edward Austin Burke—a Kentucky-born Louisiana Democrat who went on to become a proponent of expansionism and imperialism in Honduras—illuminates the transnational implications of Reconstruction and its aftermath. Through careful examination of personal papers, news accounts, promotional materials, Congressional testimonies and other government records, …

Machine Politics And Urban Renewal In Providence, Rhode Island: The Era Of Mayor Joseph A. Doorley, Jr., 1965-74, Carl A. Antonucci Jr.
History & Classics Dissertations and Masters Theses
Joseph A. Doorley, Jr., was inaugurated as the mayor of the city of Providence on January 4, 1965. At that time, Doorley was both youngest mayor in the history of the city of Providence as well as the youngest mayor of any major city in the United States. His tenure as mayor was marked by a series of political, racial, and fiscal tensions and offers insight into the dynamics of politics – both local and national – in the latter part of the twentieth century. Doorley was a product of the Providence Democratic “machine” that dominated Providence politics from 1936 …

The Violent, Furious, And Persistent Unions: Picher, Oklahoma During The 1930s, Jordan L. Boyd
Theory and Practice: HIST430
"From all directions as one approaches Picher, Oklahoma, the mountainous chat piles loom prominently in the distance, impressive testimony to the labor of thousands of miners and mill men who spent their lives extracting and milling lead and zinc ores from the Tri-State Mining District of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri." The mines started to be discovered in the regions of Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma during and before the turn of the Twentieth Century. More and more people begin to inhabit these regions and with more settlement through the heart of America, shifted to more exploration of the rich resources …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Public servants are paid to serve the American people. Do it well." Donald Rumsfeld, 2001
It's not often that I quote or even think about Donald Rumsfeld. I'm pretty sure he doesn't think about me at all. Still, that quote above is a keen (if obvious) observation that so often we in the world of public service Civil War interpretation forget. I work for the Federal Government in my 'real' job. This blog is where I brain dump everything else rattling around in my mind. Inspiration strikes at all hours, and last week the bolt came out of the blue …

Paupers To Princes: Quapaw Royalties From The Tri-State Mining Area Land-Leases And Their Effects Of The Tribal Culture, Jordan Adams
Theory and Practice: HIST430
On January 4, 1918, the Miami Record Herald ran a story that had become quite common in the years preceding. The newspaper out of Miami, Oklahoma received a story that the United States Government had declared three members of the Quapaw tribe incompetent to manage their funds and land. The rumor mill declared a bad investment led to Ben Quapaw, Se-Sah Quapaw, and Wah Tah Neh Zah Goodeagle to receive the declaration. In the minds of many, it was just another Indian wasting their mining money. What was happening was a far more troubling situation. Two attorneys who had been …
Miners And Their Machines: How Early Turn-Of-The-Century Mining Techniques And Equipment Influenced The Tri-State Area, Chuck Boyles
Miners And Their Machines: How Early Turn-Of-The-Century Mining Techniques And Equipment Influenced The Tri-State Area, Chuck Boyles
Theory and Practice: HIST430
There is very little doubt that the mechanization and modernization of early mining methods in the early 1920s and 30s within the tri-state area, and the entire United States for that matter, would have a profound impact on the miners and the rest of the country. This paper will explore the positives and the negatives of the machinery that miners began to use shortly after the turn-of-the-century. In the hope to clarify, or at least improve, the ideas of why mechanization took place so quickly and so willingly by mine operators, what is impacts were on the miners, and how …
