Finding aid and scan (Click on "additional files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 145. Correspondence of Joseph Underwood Morgan, Logan County, Kentucky. He writes to Maria D. Noel (whom he would marry in 1866) of their families, mutual friends, and his social activities. While serving in the Confederate Army, he writes of military life, including the derailment of his troop train, and of the restrictions placed on him while aprisoner at Rock Island, Illinois. A final letter discusses their intentions to marry.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

In 1961, Gettysburg played host to a kick-off event for the Civil War Centennial. The town commemorated the sendoff of the Independent Blues, a militia company which marched off to war in the aftermath of the firing on Fort Sumter. The affair was huge. The Diamond was closed off to traffic as actors in old time clothes strutted through a political rally on the square. Spectators watched from the sidewalks as speakers mounted a wagon and gesticulated wildly at the crowd. Two letters relate to her submission of the manuscript for the story “Jack” and explain her eagerness to read and correct the proof. She also writes of her home in East Gloucester, Massachusetts and of the challenge of composing short stories. A third letter from Newton Center, Massachusetts discusses her submission of chapters of her memoir, offers to make changes, and advises of her availability by telephone.

Index of accounts is located in the front of the volume, followed by the full accounts of the store’s customers. A label affixed to the ledger’s cover indicates that the volume was originally intended for recording information about Warren County court cases, but this was never done. The label is signed by James D. Hines.
