Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Following the 2008 reassessment, TPWD contracted CAS to carry out a systematic survey of the 1,460-acre park, excluding previously recorded sites, inundated terrain, and areas of modern disturbance that resulted from park infrastructure developments. The purpose of the survey was to ensure a complete inventory of cultural resources within the park. The effort included pedestrian survey and excavation of 215 shovel tests, as well as archival research to identify historic structures that may have once been present, but that were now razed and that could be considered potential sites. In the summer of 2009, the Center for Archaeological Studies at Texas State University (CAS) conducted an archaeological survey and limited testing of portions of the Rafter Z Ranch and Saba Ranch (collectively referred to as the Herd Ranch) in western Menard County, Central Texas. This work was privately funded by the Herd family, who has long maintained a sincere interest in identifying, understanding, and preserving the very many historic and prehistoric resources on their property. On April 16, 1862, sixty-one-year-old Nicholas became a freeman. Prior to his emancipation, Nicholas had lived and labored as a slave in the nations capital, where freemen professed to honor the principles espoused in the Declaration of Independence. It would take congressional action and the president's concurrence to elevate Nicholas and his fellow African Americans from chattel to umankind. Even then, his worth and that of the more than 3,000 other men, women, and children who gained their freedom by the statute was measured in strictly economic terms.

The root of large-scale human conflict is the protection of economic interests. The economic motivations for the South to secede clashed with the interests of the North in preserving the trade relationships that existed. In choosing the path that led to conflict over peace, decision-makers leaned towards what they believed would be most profitable on the margins. The financial viability of a southern Confederacy was contingent upon the successful separation of Gulf states from the Union. The economic interests generated by Florida's Gulf ports provided a strong incentive for the state to secede, for the emerging Confederacy to support that …

When Virginia was first colonized, the environment wasn’t stable enough to support art. With the cultivation of tobacco and the steadying of the economy, in the mid-eighteenth century, families suddenly became wealthy enough to support it. Wealthy families had their portraits taken and put on display in their house to show their status in society and remind visitors of this status. Unlike England’s high society, the portraits didn’t start off showing their elaborate wealth, it first depicted them as humble middle class families with hints of their wealth represented. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

This thesis explores America’s treatment of the Mexican worker in the United States between 1942 and 1964, the years in which an international guest worker agreement between the United States and Mexico informally known as the Bracero Program was in place, and one in which heightened fears of illegal immigration resulted in Operation Wetback, one of the largest deportation programs in U.S. history. The Mexican worker’s experience during the bracero era brings to light core traits of American national identity, such as xenophobia and ethnocentrism, that today obstruct the United States’ ability to resolve its currently conflicted relationship with the …

Father Charles E. Coughlin was one of the most prominent, and most controversial, figures in the United States in the 1930s and in the early years of the 1940s. This Canadian-born cleric rose from the life of an ordinary parish priest to becoming one of the leading radio phenomena of his day, masterfully using the new medium to command a vast audience. Coughlin began his radio career addressing religious subjects, but he expanded into the realm of politics by the early 1930s. The idea of a "new world order" based on peace, justice and democracy is not unique to the post-Cold War era. President Woodrow Wilson utilized the same rhetoric when discussing the end of World War I and the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Wilson's "new world order" provided a foundation to his conception of New Diplomacy. Yet 1919 was not the start of a "new world order" based on New Diplomacy. The Treaty of Versailles, negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference, became considered a harsh treaty that was not based on New Diplomacy. How did New Diplomacy fail in 1919, …

This chapter reflects on radio spectrum management in the United States, with the aim of identifying useful historical and comparative lessons for European Union policy makers as they contemplate the adoption of pan-European market mechanisms to allocate radio frequencies. It explores the history of American radio regulation and the impact of conflicting interpretations of that history on contemporary policy debates surrounding the liberalization of spectrum markets. The public interest theory of policy making has long been critiqued as inappropriate to spectrum management by economists following the lead of Ronald Coase. But the American experience with radio regulation suggests that economic …

This tribute to Father Joseph O'Callahan, S.J. profiles the family upbringing and religious training of the Jesuit priest who served as a chaplain in the United States Navy and later as a professor at the College of the Holy Cross. It also recounts Fr. O'Callahan's heroic efforts in the aftermath of an attack on the USS Franklin during World War II. He was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the first chaplain of the armed forces to ever receive the nation's highest honor.

During the Revolutionary War and the first decades of the early U.S. Republic, as free people of color sought to define their place in the new nation, they expressed little connection to an American nationality. But antebellum black leaders later articulated a powerful vision of Africans and Americans. As slaves and free blacks had done during the Revolutionary era, they based this African American identity in part upon a biblical view of human rights and a natural rights philosophy, but they also buttressed black identity formation by making a rights discourse the fulcrum of their argument for full inclusion in …
