These letters deal almost exclusively with the manufacture and marketing of a piece of agricultural equipment called the "corn cob crusher." A small amount of correspondence also documents Mr. Porter's personal agricultural pursuits.

Kraemer. Colodny and Shachtman argue that Kraemer was the leading intellectual behind what became known as the neo-conservative movement, witnessed by the fact that Kraemer influenced so many high-ranking conservative figures over the course of six decades."

My thesis discusses the reasons for the creation of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, in 1881. I discuss why Father Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest in New Haven, Connecticut, believed that the organization was necessary to prevent Catholic men from joining the "secret societies" of the nineteenth century. I also explain the present-day Knights of Columbus and how McGivney's vision is carried out today through the Order.

In September 1958, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus declared the four high schools in Little Rock closed in order to avoid court-ordered desegregation. Many organizations throughout the city protested and pushed for a re-opening of the schools. One of these was the Little Rock branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). As a group of educated women with prior activist experiences, the branch was particularly well-positioned to make a difference in the city. Furthermore, the national AAUW organization advocated that, during this period of societal change, branches act as catalysts for rational discussion within their communities. The Little Rock …

This thesis focuses on the life of Susette La Flesche, a 19th century Omaha woman. La Flesche challenged views Anglo Americans held of American Indians as she spoke out against failed U.S. government policy towards the American Indians. A champion for allotment, Susette was one of the few to realize its potential shortcomings. She continued her pursuit for American Indian equality throughout her life but found agrarian reform equally important and rewarding. Writing was important to Susette from her letters to friends in the east, her speeches, short stories, and newspaper articles she wrote in her relatively brief lifetime. It …

During the 2008 spike in oil prices, oil companies and government officials were brought under close scrutiny as many Americans began to question why prices were able to rise so quickly. Americans had become accustomed to living in an economy where cheap oil was the norm, and demanded answers when that situation changed. What most of them did not know is that they were repeating history and mimicking the response to the 1973 oil embargo. In a 1975 article on the place of yeomen farmers in a slave society, Eugene D. Genovese identified a critical question concerning the nature of the Old South. The issue, he wrote, is to explain “the degree of class collaboration and social unity” that existed among all whites, which to Genovese appeared “all the more impressive in the face of so many internal strains.” Although some critics mistakenly charged that Genovese argued for non-slaveholder passivity in the face of planter hegemony, he was, in actuality, acknowledging that class relations were permeated with tension and discord, causing bitter resentments that occasionally …

The purpose of this study is to centralize, into women's history, the marginalized historical voices of women activists working in sexualized labor (and/or those using sexualized economic strategies). This thesis situates the work of Josie Washburn, a former madam who turned self advocate in 1907, squarely within the Progressive Era debate on prostitution, By centralizing women's voices of sexualized lahor, it provides a means to track the long-term evolution of the intersections between women's sexualized labor choices, traditional labor choices, self-advocacy, popular media, and social/political movements on behalf of women. Robert H. Jackson’s service as Solicitor General has attained mythic status, prompting academics and commentators consistently to rate him as one of the greatest appointees to that office. In part, his stature reflects his extraordinary skill as an attorney. In some measure, Jackson’s legend draws upon the Supreme Court’s growing liberalism, which occurred upon his watch.
