On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Northern Business And The Shape Of Southern Progress: The Case Of Tennessee's "Model City", Edward L. Ayers

State governments, understandably eager to entice needed capital to their region, no longer entertained the earlier progressive ideal of an autonomous South. The perennially-tempting vision of rapid economic growth funded by plentiful Northern capital arose in new, distinctly modern, attire.
The Swamp Land Act In Oregon, 1870-1895, Richard Mark Pintarich
The Swamp Land Act In Oregon, 1870-1895, Richard Mark Pintarich
Dissertations and Theses
The Swamp Land Act of 1849, originally intended to give the state of Louisiana the unproductive swamplands within its borders and use the proceeds to construct the drains and levees necessary to reclaim these lands, was extended to Oregon in 1860. Oregon did not act on the matter until 1870, but once begun, it became a prolific source of political corruption, fiscal irresponsibility, fraud, and land speculation and monopolization. Even though the physiography of Oregon was much different than the states in the Mississippi Valley, millions of acres of "swampland" were filed upon and the state sold hundreds of thousands …
A Different Light: Jefferson Views Henry, 1759-1784, Thomas Wesley Redman
A Different Light: Jefferson Views Henry, 1759-1784, Thomas Wesley Redman
History Theses & Dissertations
This work studies the relations of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson in the period of'759 to 1780. The study reveals that Jefferson's denunciations of Henry, in his letters, were a product of his perceptions of Henry. Those perceptions were forged in their personal and political associations after 1759, and those perceptions were essentially complete by the end of 1784.
Jefferson perceived Henry as both a personal opportunist and a political opportunist. Jefferson stressed Henry's anti-intellectualism, as well as the contrast between his oratorical skills and his lack of analytical skills. Jefferson also asserted that Henry was avaricious and obsessed with …
