The Coldest Crucible - Arctic Exploration in American Culture.
March 14, 2009 to June 21, 2009
In the late 1800s, “Arctic fever” swept the nation as dozens of American expeditions sailed north to find a sea route to Asia and, ultimately, to stand at the North Pole. This exhibition paints a new portrait of these polar voyagers by placing them within the tempests of American cultural life.

Osher Library Associates, Occasional Publication No.3.
For professor Macdougall, this book is the culmination of over twenty-five years of research and writing carried out during breaks from teaching at the University of Maine. By examining the cultural milieu of his time, he places Greenleaf's contributions within the context of Maine's growth and development during its formative years from province to statehood. This biographer also shares a kinship with Greenleaf on several counts. First is an appreciation for the land which Greenleaf held dear, since his …

The Devil In The Details: Evidence For The Affliction Of Lyme Disease In Seventeenth Century Massachusetts, Mary Drymon Derose Ma
All Student Scholarship
This study looks for evidence that Lyme disease is an old affliction that predates its "discovery" in Connecticut in the nineteen seventies. It analyzes the role that Lyme disease may have played in the history of English settlement in Massachusetts during the seventeenth century. In 1692, the residents of the Salem Village area were describing physical and mental afflictions that they felt were caused by witchcraft. Some of the seventeenth-century symptoms are very similar to …

The Library building was built in 1919 as a bakery and operated as such until 1954 after which it was occupied by several businesses, but primarily Johnson's plumbing supply company. Once a state-of-the-art baking facility, the building had the load-bearing capability to house a Library. The University purchased it in 1991 and the renovation turned it into a Portland landmark
