History Of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Bishopville, South Carolina, Circa 1814-2008, John Kelley Segars, Dorothy Tedder Smith, Linda Haley Sutherland, Betty Brown Truesdale

Methodist Books

This story of Bethlehem United Methodist Church is compiled with much love and deep appreciation of those earlier dedicated Methodists who organized this Church and of those (including early church historians, newspaper editors, archives and courthouse employees) who shared information that is being used by the authors to write this revised version of her history.

While researching and recording this history, we discovered numerous church land conveyances, newspaper articles, 1878-1928 history of the Woman's Missionary Society of Bethlehem, other data that had not been recorded in prior histories, and numerous bits of information about events that occurred during 1990-2008. We …

Book Review: Expanding Horizons For American Lutherans: The Story Of Abdel Ross Wentz, Charles Hambrick-Stowe

This biography by his son, himself a historian and seminary professor and president, traces Wentz’s life from childhood in Lineboro, Maryland through his significant career in Gettysburg and much wider circles to his retirement near the Seminary campus. Obviously a labor of love and written in a style …

Commending Religion To All Around Us: Baptist Church Discipline, 1780-1850, Claire White

Psi Sigma Siren

In 1818, a letter signed “B.” was sent to The American Baptist Magazine and Missionary Intelligencer. The letter, titled “Things to be set in order in the churches,” stated that the Baptists’ “moral and social habits, including [their] general intercourse with the world, must be such, as to commend religion to all around us.” While all religions fashion themselves pure and saintly, B., and his Baptist contemporaries, truly believed that their discipline and social habits, not just their internal piety, made them the world’s saviors. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, American Baptist congregations were flourishing. In 1740, …

Dwelling, Walking, Serving: Organic Preservation Along The Camino De Santiago Pilgrimage Landscape, Mercedes Chamberlain Quesada-Embid

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study is an exploration of the people and the landscape of the well-known Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Although there are many routes that make up the entirety of the pilgrimage, this research is specifically focused on the landscape of the Camino Francés, or French Route, in northern Spain. The path has been written about in many ways and for a myriad of reasons since it became affiliated with the Christian tradition in the early ninth century. This research, however, is different. By way of an environmental history and hermeneutic approach, an investigation of the interrelated and overlapping human …
