The History of the Confederate General Hospital Located at Farmville, VA 1862-65 was published by the Farmville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) on April 7, 1916 by the Martin Printing Company in Farmville. The information found within the fifteen-page book was provided from an 1897 letter addressed to the UDC from James L. White, M. D., who was a surgeon stationed at the hospital during the American Civil War and a citizen of Farmville until his death in 1909. VCU University History Books
The Charlotte Williams Memorial Hospital, a private hospital in Richmond, Virginia, opened as a private hospital in 1903. The hospital advertised its aim as relieving "suffering humanity by every means known to medical science." It had private rooms for paying patients and separate wards for "charity" patients. The aim was to make no profit and increase the number of free beds quickly. The hospital was deeded to the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 1913 and used as a teaching hospital; it later housed nursing students. The journal of Harmony A. Smith contains both lecture notes from Jefferson Medical College, bound together with journal entries from his trip along the Oregon Trail from May 20th to July 6th, 1850. Pages are missing from the notebook – lecture notes begin on p. 22 and end on p. 80, with blank leaves between pp. 69-70, and evidence of paste-ins removed. The Oregon Trail journal begins on p. 29, and ends on p. 80 before the conclusion of the journey to California. The Trail journal includes entries regarding stream crossings, contact with Native Americans, a detailed …
