This collection is composed of the Carder family papers created primarily during WWII. The collection is principally composed of letters sent between various members of the Carder family, chiefly to and from Ancel, during his enlistment as a Marine in WWII. Another bulk portion of the collection is composed of greeting cards mailed for various occasions to Orton and Chloie, remembrance cards that were collected by Orton of his congregation, and religious materials related to marriages and baptisms conducted by Orton as well as his participation in WV Methodist organizational activities for the Fourth Street Church in Huntington. A major portion of the Bertha Filson papers consists of certificates of award, membership, and certification--all pertaining to Mrs. Filson’s activities as an educator, churchwoman, and Marshall University alumna. Correspondence includes letters from Lawrence J. Corbly, president of Marshall College from 1896 until 1915; George M. Ford, state superintendent of schools; and James Leftwich, a former student of Mrs. Filson’s who became president of the F. W. Woolworth Company.

There are also some compositions written by Mrs. Filson for an English class, many of which describe persons, places or events in Mason County, West Virginia. A large collection of newspaper …

The Rock Hill Council on Human Relations Records consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, program notes, newsletters, membership lists, and other records of a body organized in 1954 by the Rock Hill City Council to further communication between the city’s African- Americans and whites. The collection includes material relating to the South Carolina Council on Human Relations with which the Rock Hill Council was affiliated, American Friends Services committee, Southern Regional Council, and a black & white 16mm film pertaining to the origin and early development of the Council. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

The collection consists primarily of two groups of letters. The first group were written by Arminda Holiday Clendenning of Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio, to her sister Ann Holliday Winder of Iowa, from 1850 until 1867. She writes of local and family news, life in the country, and later, as a young married woman, of her family and her husband’s business. Several letters mention travels and migrations of family and friends to the West.

Tyler commenting on his purchase of six copies of her book “Facts and Falsehoods”; and asks him to read “The Master of Red Leaf.”
