The Radical wing of the Republican Party, which created the state of West Virginia, imposed a punitive reconstruction program on its citizens. The disenfranchisement of most returning Confederate soldiers and the state's Confederate supporters was carried out illegally in many cases. The overzealous administering of restrictive measures longer than necessary or acceptable caused a split in the Republican Party leading to the rise of the Democratic Party in the state. The Liberal Republicans joined the Democrats in successfully removing many of the reconstruction measures affecting the disenfranchised. Once the Democratic Party regained the legislative majority, they swept away all the …

The collection was divided into three record groups; administration, programs, and services. The majority of the administration files consist of annual reports and minutes from various committee and board meetings. The program files contain an assortment of fundraisers and campaigns, which includes the annual American Red Cross Ball 1985-2001. The service files offer a variety of information on disaster, blood, and military service to the community including information on the Canteen, which was in operation during WWI. This collection is an artificially created collection from different donors, consisting primarily of scrapbooks, programs, and other ephemera related to Huntington High School. Ephemera includes a 1920 issue of the Tatler student newspaper, commencement programs, and materials created during various class reunions for the classes of 1921, 1928, 1929, 1937, and 1945. Scrapbooks for the class of 1921 reunions and Myrtle R. Cooke’s “The Girl Graduate’s Scrapbook” include extensive amounts of photographs and printed material related to the reunions and Huntington High School respectively. Cooke’s scrapbook also includes unrelated family materials.

This collection consists of typewritten transcriptions of letters sent from David Caldwell between 1818 and 1853, an Episcopal clergyman, to members of his family. They discuss personal and family matters. Letters were sent from Bennington, Vermont, Georgetown, Washington, DC, and Amherst County, Virginia. These copies were found in “History of Joseph Caldwell and his descendants…” published in 1926 in Newburyport, Mass.

This collection is principally composed of a diary written by Robert A. Grant while he was a student at Marshall between 1933 and 1938. The diary covers Grant’s life as a student and his work in the Anderson-Newcomb department store. Additional materials include copies of the Parthenon published after the 1970 Marshall plane crash, a copy of the Greenline with Grant’s name in it as a donor, two algebra textbooks from 1903 and 1904, and newspaper clippings about an October 1970 riot in Huntington.

Emily Greene Balch was the second American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and worked throughout her lifetime to better the world for her fellow humans. As one who was shaped by the Progressive Movement in both character and action, she has nonetheless never received the historical spotlight given to other workers of her time such as Jane Addams. A survivor of protest against war, she has been virtually ignored despite her many activities and writings on behalf of peace, suffrage, and social reform. Even Mercedes M. Randall, who wrote the only biography of Balch, fails to fully examine …

The records of the Huntington League of the Association of Junior Leagues International consist of newsletters, yearbooks, annual reports, program materials and other published materials, scrapbooks, and production books from the Junior Leagues's programs. The focus of the collection primarily covers the League's publications and papers from their programs and activities. The inclusive dates range from 1929 to 1997, however, most materials are from the 1950s through the 1970s. The Huntington League's children's theater papers begin ca. 1929 (Series IV), and the cookbook can be found in the publication "League Lines".

This collection is composed of three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings about various events in Huntington, concert programs, photographs (mostly unidentified and of family), such ephemera as ticket stubs, postcards, and greeting cards, and monthly reports of his work at the post office. Topics covered in the clippings and ephemera include trains, Huntington history, images of women, and local news and obituaries. Most significant about the collection is the unique assortment and number of items present, capturing a snapshot of life in early to mid-twentieth century Huntington, West Virginia and America.

Lowell E. Long’s interview focuses on the region of Appalachia: its location, environments, people, and identity. Mr. Long was born in April 1941 in War, McDowell County, WV. His family moved to East Liverpool, OH, after World War II, and relocated to Huntington, WV, in January 1945. In the audio clip provided, Mr. Long discusses what it means to be Appalachian and focuses on family bonds and sense of belonging in the region. Bob Chapman was born in Louisa, KY. He grew up on Homemade Holler in the coal community of McVeigh, KY, located in Pike County. His father worked for the Eastern Coal Corporation as an explosions miner. Mr. Chapman attended a two-room school house for a short time in the 1940s, but continued his education through high school in the McVeigh school system.
