The Campbell-Staats collection consists of two separate series of information. The first series is comprised of the Jennie Ratliff Campbell papers. These papers consist mainly of personal correspondence to Miss Ratliff dating from 1875-1888. The majority of these letter were from two particular individuals, R. G. Drysdale and W. S. Livengood, and concerned everyday occurrence and mutual acquaintances. The remainder of the series is made up of samples from her schoolwork, songs she had copied, business correspondence, and a book of poetry given to her by her fiancee, C. W. Campbell.

Frank Brooks was born in Fayette County, WV, but grew up in Carter County, KY, in the early 1900s. He attended a one room school house through the third grade. Mr. Brooks began working in coal mines with his father in Borderland, WV, when he was 13 years old. In the audio clip provided, he discusses his first time in a coal mine. He focuses on how he tried to appear bigger than he was in order to be able to work. In his interview, Mr. Brooks compares and contrasts the labor conditions in the mines before and after unionization. …

Dr. Don V. Hatton was a physician and public health specialist in both West Virginia and Kentucky beginning in the 1930s. During his interview, Dr. Hatton discusses Appalachia and focuses on the definition of the region and what it means to be Appalachian. He also discusses his transition from being a public health specialist focused on preventative medicine to a practicing internal medicine physician. In the audio clip provided, he compares and contrasts his public health work in West Virginia and Kentucky through a focus on physical environment, education, and socioeconomic status. Born in Jackson County, West Virginia, Mrs. Anna Hopkins spent most of her life on a farm near Beech Fork, West Virginia. After breaking her hip in 1971, she moved to Ripley, West Virginia, where she was still residing at the time of the interview. Mrs. Hopkins reminisces about her childhood experiences, farm chores, neighborhood gatherings, and holiday celebrations. She also discusses the Depression and the two world wars.

Mr. Somerville lived on a farm near Ravenswood, West Virginia, until age fourteen. He then enlisted in the army and served in the Spanish-American War as a member of the occupational troops in the Phillipines. Subjects he discusses include: life on the farm, medical and educational facilities and opportunities. Mr. Somerville also discusses the reasons for his enlistement into the army at such an early age. At the time of the interview, Mr. Somerville was residing in Vienna, West Virginia.

Born at Henderson, West Virginia, Mrs. Price was a teacher for Kanawha County, West Virginia for forty-four years. As of 1972, Mrs. Price was retired and residing in Hernshaw, West Virginia. Mrs. Price relates the story of her reasons for entering the teaching profession and her career while teaching at one-room schoolhouses. She also discusses some of the situations and problems involving transportation and employment confronting the people of Hernshaw, West Virginia.

The Draper manuscripts are composed of many thousands of items in 486 volumes. They relate chiefly to the area between the Mississippi River on the west and the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, especially the frontier region during the period 1755-1815, and consist of original papers collected by Lyman C. Draper and transcripts and notes made by him. Included are Draper’s partially completed life of Daniel Boone, and his unpublished histories of "Border Forays" and "Mecklenburg Declarations". The Floyd J. Smith diaries were written between 1887 and 1893, when Floyd Smith was a young man of 16 to 21 years of age. The entries are concerned primarily with his great interest in reading, music, painting, photography, and hunting. Included in the collection are two medical notebooks from the University of Maryland, where Mr. Smith was a student. Of particular interest in the diaries are the passages describing holiday activities in Grafton, West Virginia, and others. The last diary describes his first year at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters written to Eugenia Miller Thackston while she was a student in boarding school in Greenupsburg, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio, by her parents in Barboursville, Virginia before the Civil War. The letters include information about family members, the difficulty in maintaining a school, and developments in the town of Barboursville. There are also some letters written during the Civil War describing the hardships of the war on the family. Other items include addresses and writings of Eugenia's husband, Benjamin Thackston, while he was a student at Randolph-Macon College.
