The Vanguard

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has designated LHRAA as recipient of a $4700 grant in support of developing a regional thrust to respond to problems of racism at local level. The amount was allocated from a special item authorized by the 1971 Milwaukee Convention of the Synod when a resolution was passed calling for a concerted effort to combat racism.

North American Lutheran Christians must come alive to the truth that the words, spoken by their missionaries with all force and love, will not be believed as long as the actions of the society out of which that proclaimer has come - actions which result in exploitation of the poor and hungry of the world to maintain an already opulent, luxury-oriented society - betray the words of the Word.

With this issue of The Vanguard the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America will begin a new facet of its ministry and service to the church. Now in its twentieth year, LHRAA has, whenever possible, worked closely with leaders and members of the three major Lutheran church bodies as catalyst and resource in the area of human relations, designing and implementing programs to equip laity and clergy for leadership roles. Another avenue of communication is now being opened.

LHRAA Executive Secretary, Karl Lutze attended the Northwest Regional Conference in Tacoma, Wash., August 2 and 3. Pastor Lutze is a three-year member of the Executive Committee of the National Indian Lutheran Board, and a charter member and past president of Lutheran Church and Indian people. In the spring of 1968, shortly after the Los Angeles Chapter of LHRAA was organized, plans for implementing a summer recreation project were made. Target for the first year was to present sewing classes for teenage girls caught in innercity communities where recreational resources were in short supply. A newsletter to some 350 Lutheran churches in Los Angeles and Orange Counties elicited used sewing machines, money and yardage with which to supply the classes, and women volunteers to teach. That first summer, six sites were staffed with a total enrollment of 150 girls.

The gathering of armed government personnel, the sound of fired weapons, and the entrenched commitment of Indian people at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, constitute a chilling and grim reminder of a senseless slaughter of innocents less than 85 years ago at the very same site. That occasion saw U.S. troops bearing down on defenseless men, women, and children in the little village.

Encouraged by a successful three year pilot venture in Los Angeles, LHRAA is attempting to increase the effectiveness of its work through the appointment of co-ordinators in different cities across the country. A recent Associated Press news story by Bernard Gavzer makes a startling, frightening comparison between the conditions which marked the lives of people in minority communities in this country during the 1960's, and the conditions which affect their lives today.

"As bad as things were then. . . they are worse now. Jobs, police, hostility, housing, schools, welfare, medical care. Bad. And a change, too, in many people. Despair, isolation, a notion that the color of evil is white."

As Lutheran meetings go, this was a strange one. Probably more non-Lutherans than Lutherans were present. And most of the non-Lutherans were Indians - Indians from California, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Illinois and a few more states.

A hope which LHRAA has held through all the days of its history is that the church would assume a responsible position of leadership in the matter of human relations.

Working as catalyst in some situations, and resource in others, the Association has found itself in increased contact with church leaders in designing and executing programs to equip clergy and laity for leadership roles.

On Wednesday, December 1, the Indians of the Chicago Indian Village were brought to trial by the Northern Illinois Conference of the Methodist Church of America, for illegally possessing Camp Seager, a Methodist-owned camp located near Naperville. The trial, held at the DuPage County court house in Wheaton, Ill., resulted in an eviction notice being served on the group - about 50 Indians led by Mike Chosa.
