Psychology from the Margins

This article presents a review of the colonial past that has marked Peruvian society and has managed to remain in it through the neocolonialism. The purpose of this article is to account for how instrumental political use of psychology, and sometimes psychiatry, has been and continues to be used to favor the people who exercise power and to perpetuation the current system. For this, some examples of how this work has been carried out are described. Specifically, mention is made of how "ethnic hierarchies" were supported with the eugenic model, the "normal" was up justifying the subjugation of the indigenous …

This project argues that disability and physical difference were simultaneously both sensationalized and hidden in the United States and the United Kingdom, while also being overemphasized in non-Western countries, with the intention of evoking either revulsion, a sense of racial superiority, or pity, all of which was used as justification for Western imperialism. A Forgotten ‘Riot’: Discovering The Black Cat Tavern Raid’S Place In Queer History, Katelyn "Katie" Nash

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Black Cat Tavern Raid of 1967 has long been relegated to the footnotes of history, and, when it is remembered, it is portrayed as a riot similar to the one that occurred at the Stonewall Inn two years later. Using archival and contemporary sources, this article explores the events surrounding the raid and subsequent protest and places them within the greater context of the 1960s. In addition, I contextualize and analyze the legacy of these events, explore their often overlooked contributions to queer history, and conclude that, while they are often overshadowed by Stonewall, they still deserve to be …

The American Soldier: The Contested Existence Of The Continental Army, Alexander M. Remington

In the modern United States, the military is respected and honored by the public and military leaders alike. However, during the American Revolution, society was not yet convinced that having a standing army was necessary or beneficial to the Republic. The Continental Army was heavily contested during the war and conflicted with the civilians and its commanders alike. This paper follows the trend of other social histories by investigating just how these conflicts played out and how the common soldier navigated them.

This paper analyses the development of social policies in Malta, with a particular focus on events which have impacted on the country’s growth and subsequently on its social security system and policies involving housing, health, education migration and employment. In recent decades, with costs to sustain an ever-growing web of social services becoming more demanding, governments have tried to encourage more self-help and to lessen the heavy dependence on aid structures within the system, pushed at times by recommendations from regional and international institutions. This thesis examines the history and the current practices (popularity, service styles, and recipes) of the Provencal dish bouillabaisse. It aims to establish the evolution and the traditional characteristics of the dish. It also explores the historical and contemporary popularity as well as the everyday role that bouillabaisse plays in the regional identity of Provencal cooking. Finally, the research questions if bouillabaisse would benefit from a European Union quality schemes protection or official recognition by UNESCO. This research uses an exploratory sequential mixed methods model combining qualitative and quantitative data collection which are analysed in a sequence of phases. …

This dissertation locates itself at the intersection of performance theory, South Asian studies and philosophy of history to examine the history of an urban consciousness known as banarasipan (literally, "Banarasi-ness") as performed by the people of Banaras in northern India. Over the course of the twentieth century, banarasipan, as a distinct way of being in everyday life, has been characterized by its valorization of heroic laziness, seditious laughter, subversive obscenities, and by its egalitarian subjectivity that overrides sectarian and class differences. In the context of South Asian history, this dissertation interrogates the theoretical premises of both Marxist and postcolonial modes …

I am looking at parents to see if video games caused a moral panic as comic books and heavy metal had in the past. A comparison of these media with video games begs the question: has gaming as a medium been treated by parents, religious figures, legislators, and others in the same way as comic books and heavy metal in the past? A driving force in this buildup of moral panic is due to video games being a more interactive form of entertainment compared to reading comic books or listening to heavy metal.
