The Kentucky Humanities Council is an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities committed to providing programs and services that facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Kentucky’s cultural heritage and future. The Council’s program catalog features scholars from across the Commonwealth who make presentations on a myriad of humanities topics. Later, costumed actors, who delivered dramatic monologues about Kentucky’s famous, infamous, and composite personalities, were added. This collection consists of copies of Frank Sibley’s columns about waterways, namely the Ohio River, and steamboat and river history published in the Gallipolis [OH] Tribune and the Waterways Journal. There are two sets of copies—one in a binder, and the other in a manuscript box.

This collection is principally composed of a diary written by Robert A. Grant while he was a student at Marshall between 1933 and 1938. The diary covers Grant’s life as a student and his work in the Anderson-Newcomb department store. Additional materials include copies of the Parthenon published after the 1970 Marshall plane crash, a copy of the Greenline with Grant’s name in it as a donor, two algebra textbooks from 1903 and 1904, and newspaper clippings about an October 1970 riot in Huntington.

William Warner Jones (May 22, 1922-June 5, 2003) worked as an insurance agent during his life and had an abiding interest in local history, especially on the subject of Blennerhassett Island, the Blennerhassett family, and the Blennerhassett-Burr Conspiracy. Volumes are composed of amateur-bound books of copies of historical documents as well as articles about the Blennerhassetts.
