The Rise Of European Commercial Association During The Middle Ages, Ellen Douglas Moule
The Rise Of European Commercial Association During The Middle Ages, Ellen Douglas Moule
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The unity of Western Europe has not yet approached the political, economic and religious entity realized under the Roman Empire. Nor is it likely to duplicate such a centralized and authoritative basis of organization. It is the purpose of this paper to explore European economic association on the basis of co-operation rather than dominance. For this purpose historical cornerstones of economic co-operation and commercial endeavor will be discussed.
...
Among them the individuals and groups who pursued trade not only revived the collapsed commerce known to the Roman world, but provided the framework for modern commercial and financial activity and …
The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey
The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey
Graduate Thesis Collection
This study deals with the influence of rivers on the history of Indiana. It is difficult for us to visualize that some of the small streams that we cross many times with hardly a glance, were once the most important link in a vast chain of commerce. The early settler depended on these streams to get his surplus products to market. A glance at a road map of Indiana will reveal the importance that the early settler assigned to rivers and streams. Can you find any city or town of any size that is not located near a stream of …
Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania
Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The decline of British influence in world affairs is one of the more pronounced political phenomena of modern times. Over the past century key territories subject to British rule have been slipping loose from their imperial moorings at an ever more rapid rate. Those remaining subject to British authority grow progressively more belligerent.
In his search for an understanding or this eclipse or British sovereignty, the contemporary historian finds himself groping through a network of complexly interrelated social, political, economic, and psychological processes. One or another student or history has argued that specific instances or groups of these processes are …

Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler
Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler
History Faculty Scholarship
When the Federal Census was taken in 1940, the population of Ellensburg, Washington, numbered 5,944. Several hundred have been added since, but there has been no wartime boom. As the home of Central Washington College of Education, the seat of government of Kittitas County, and the trading center for a prosperous agricultural and stock-raising community, it is (except perhaps during the annual Rodeo) a quiet town of steady habits with a particularly stable economy. It is doubtful if any of its present inhabitants expect it to become a great metropolis, and perhaps few would desire it to be. Yet Ellensburg …
The Negro In California Before 1890, A. Odell Thurman
The Negro In California Before 1890, A. Odell Thurman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Because so little has been written concerning the Negro in California and because the dynamic and romantic sequences in the development of this country have always interested me, I have become interested in knowing what part the Negro, free and slave, played in this panorama of events. Were there Negroes with early expeditions? To what extent did they migrate to the West when "gold fever" had become a nation-wide epidemic? Did they find gold? Where did they settle? What did they do? What difficulty did they encounter politically, socially, and economically? These are questions that have filled my mind, and …
Conrad Baker, Former Governor Of Indiana, Arnold Ernst R. Muelller
Conrad Baker, Former Governor Of Indiana, Arnold Ernst R. Muelller
Graduate Thesis Collection
This thesis was assigned by the Department of German principally to learn through the study of the German newspapers of the day what influence the German-American population of Indiana might have had upon the election of Governor Conrad baker and also upon his whole administration as such; since Governor Baker was of German descent and the act, August 16, 1859, which provided when the German language should be taught in the common schools, also took effect when Baker was Governor of Indiana.

A History Of Elko, Nevada : A Frontier Town, 1868-1890, Lester W. Mills
A History Of Elko, Nevada : A Frontier Town, 1868-1890, Lester W. Mills
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to present in brief form, far too brief for the wealth of material available, an account of the history of the town of Elko, Nevada. There has been no attempt to include in these pages all the interesting events which are traditional in the gossip of the town. Every effort has been made to include only such material as can be readily verified either by the memories of those still living who remember the events or, in cases where this has bailed or there has been an evident conflict of stories, by resort to …

The History Of The American Fruit Industry In The Caribbean, Oliver Eller Irons
The History Of The American Fruit Industry In The Caribbean, Oliver Eller Irons
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Caribbean countries have attracted increasing interest from students of American political history and the more their history is investigated, the more do we realize the growing significance of the role played by American capital in the development of their industries. The literature of tropical agriculture is coming to be more extensively available but until only recently has this subject received slight attention from our writers. The concentration of any attention on the fruit phase of tropical agriculture by American students of history and economics has been nearly wholly lacking, as well as receiving only scant attention from writers not …
