Gravegoods: A Primer For Preservation, Mary E. Tucker
Gravegoods: A Primer For Preservation, Mary E. Tucker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Deep East Texas is home to many historic cemeteries. The preservation of these cemeteries includes the care of gravemarkers and the management of cemetery grounds. Unfortunately, these practices often neglect gravegoods. The Caddo people have some of the earliest gravegood usage in Deep East Texas, dating back to the eighth century. European and white and black American settlers brought other funerary traditions and influences into the area beginning in the sixteenth century. Gravegoods in historic Deep East Texas cemeteries reflect these influences and traditions. This thesis led to the creation of a preservation brief that will educate the public and …
The Cultural Transmission Of Trust Norms: Evidence From A Lab In The Field On A Natural Experiment, Elira Karaja, Jared Rubin
The Cultural Transmission Of Trust Norms: Evidence From A Lab In The Field On A Natural Experiment, Elira Karaja, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
We conduct trust games in three villages in a northeastern Romanian commune. From 1775–1919, these villages were arbitrarily assigned to opposite sides of the Austrian and Ottoman/Russian border despite being located seven kilometers apart. This plausibly exogenous border assignment affected local institutions and late-18th century migration in a manner that likely also affected trust. Conditional on trust norms being affected by these centuries-old historical circumstances, our experimental design tests the degree to which such norms are transmitted intergenerationally. Consistent with theoretical predictions, we find that participants on the Austrian side that also have family roots in the village are indeed …

Early Photography In East Texas: An Exhibition, Jacob Austin Lee
Early Photography In East Texas: An Exhibition, Jacob Austin Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Stone Fort Museum is a steward for much of the historical and cultural character of East Texas. A new exhibition, such as the “Early Photography in East Texas” project is in part representative of these same social values. The exhibition serves to look at East Texas specifically as a microcosm of the social ramifications of the introduction of photography. The museum presents this project as a commentary and celebration of the culture of the region while being objective enough to discuss both the high points and the low points. The thesis project itself displays the best and most current …
Below-Deck: The Specialist Sailor In World War Ii, Gregory Falcon
Below-Deck: The Specialist Sailor In World War Ii, Gregory Falcon
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
U.S. Navy ships were made up of many unexpected jobs during World War II. Traditional war histories say little about sailors who rarely saw direct combat below active war decks but instead worked skilled jobs. Specialized sailors were often unseen as they worked below the waterline as, for example, electrician’s mates and boiler room firemen. These jobs were pivotal to keeping the ship running and allowed men to make use of their valuable time in the navy. This thesis argues that, although evolving naval culture led men to enter for various reasons, many entered to enhance their future career during …

Guides to Manuscript Collections
The collection consists of 4 “groupings” of materials that were donated by the Huntington Herald Dispatch when it moved from former offices in Huntington to its newer one in 2021. These groupings include the Herald Dispatch Subject Files, the Name Files, the Photograph Index Files, and the Office Materials (materials boxed up from individual offices in the Herald Dispatch). The first grouping of Subject Files came to the archive in 23 cabinets with 4 drawers each and contains approximately 16,000 folders of subject headings spanning the 1950s to the 2000s. The second grouping of Name Files is in 7 large …

The Bodies Of The Condemned: The Return Of The Body As The Object Of State Power, Kenzo E. Okazaki
The Bodies Of The Condemned: The Return Of The Body As The Object Of State Power, Kenzo E. Okazaki
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper provides a historical analysis of the genealogy of American policing and attempts to explain the return of state power to individual bodies. It argues that this return was informed by French counterinsurgency strategies in Algeria. Through engagement with Foucault's analysis of power and surveillance practices, it aims to shed light on and help us better understand and combat police brutality today.
