Ted's House Historic Structure Report, Scott Mueller
Ted's House Historic Structure Report, Scott Mueller
Historic Preservation Final Projects
Ted’s House, named after the previous owner, is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan at 826 Vine Place. The house is now owned by the non-profit Old House Network, which is using the house for educational classes on old house repairs. The house is currently in an interior demolition and structural stabilization phase. The roof and porches were replaced in 2012. In the interior, most of the walls have had the plaster or dry wall removed exposing the studs. This report was written as my final project for Master Program in Historic Preservation. I decided to undertake this report because it would …
The City As Palimpsest, Jeffrey A. Kroessler
The City As Palimpsest, Jeffrey A. Kroessler
Publications and Research
“Palimpsest preservation” suggest the necessity of keeping the successive layers of urban form alive rather than simply effacing and rebuilding, for that keeps a city’s history alive. No city without a tangible, tactile history, without the capacity for denizens and visitors to reach into the past while experiencing the present, can be truly vital. But this is a contested approach. George Orwell’s 1984 offers a warning in the guise of a party slogan: “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” Preservationists may advocate on historical, architectural, or cultural grounds, but the final decision …

Historic Preservation Final Projects
This final project is the culmination of my master’s degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University. For this project I focused on my family’s house in Oxford, Ohio. My intention was to create a succinct report on the structure to document both the interior and exterior of the home. To document this unique structure I first created a Historic American Building Survey, next I completed the Ohio Historic Inventory Form, and produced drawings of elevations and floor plans. The reason I selected this structure for my final project is because it is one of the only Arts and Crafts …

Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls
Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls
Historic Preservation Final Projects
The purpose of this project is to update the current tour that is being offered at the Rentschler Farm Museum. It can be all too easy to focus only on the “stuff” or artifacts that are inside a museum. Tours about “stuff” are not relatable, and typically not very interesting. This tour focuses instead on how artifacts may have been used, and on particular stories about the Rentschler family who poured their lives into their farmland. The new tour was also written in a way that is relatable to visitors of the museum. The greatest example being that to the …

Documenting Historic African American Sites In Washtenaw County, Melinda Ortiz
Historic Preservation Final Projects
This report is the final project for the Master’s of Science Program in Historic Preservation at Eastern Michigan University. The project consists of a survey of historic sites associated with African American history in Washteanw County. The chosen sites tell the story of African American history in the county. I completed inventory cards for the sites, doing research through interviews with community members associated with African American groups and local history experts, archival material, and literature on the subject. I will submit the inventory cards to the African American Cultural and Heritage Museum of Washtenaw County and to Eastern Michigan …

Geddes Town Hall School House, Sarah Marsom
Historic Preservation Final Projects
The Geddes Town Hall School House located on Eastern Michigan University's campus is representative of the rural education, locally and nationally. Since the Geddes Town Hall School House was moved to Eastern Michigan University, it has been used intermittently by professor's to host classes and to teach children about the history of schools. By creating brochures and an activity booklet about the Geddes Town Hall School House, interested individuals can learn about both the history of the structure and one-room school houses in general. Currently, the only passive interpretation of the Geddes Town Hall School House are the following: the …
