Libel In Mississippi, 1798-1832, Muriel Ann Everton

The Mississippi Territory officially became part of the United States in 1798. The territory was to be governed under the rules of the Northwest Ordinance, but those who went to govern the area found a culture that required the use of common law to settle the disputes arising from prior governments under other nations. With no precedents on which to rely, disputes led, at first, to dueling and then to libel cases. Both common law and common sense prevailed while many of the disagreements were aired publicly in newspapers. This collection contains copy read on the air by newscasters at WSAZ-TV, the local NBC affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia on Nov. 22 and 23, 1963, during coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The bulletins are based on Associated Press news reports. Also included are two wire photographs of Lee Harvey Oswald being shot and John F. Kennedy Jr. at the funeral of John F. Kennedy.

The Making Of Ai Matai: A Cautionary Tale In Fijian Historiography And Publishing, Doug Munro

Ai Matai is the official history of the Fiji military’s participation in the Malaya Emergency, written by Tevita Nawadra. What ought to be a milestone in Fijian historiography in fact has had little public or academic impact. Publication in the Fijian language and poor distribution have created a small readership that is largely local. Further official military histories are currently being researched in Fiji, and the experience of Ai Matai provides useful lessons and warnings about how to and how not to go about such projects.
