Political Affiliations Of American Economic Elites: Wayne County, Michigan, 1844, 1860, As A Test Case, Alexandra Mccoy

Wayne State University Dissertations

The scope of this study has been dictated by its methodology, which, in turn, has been determined by its aim. In order to formulate with precision a theory of political behavior for economic leaders of the mid-nineteenth century it is necessary to document the economic careers, ethnic origins, religious affiliations and family backgrounds of a carefully selected economic elite. What is obtained by the extensive documentation of over one-hundred and seventy-five individuals is the opportunity to study the relationship of these attributes to political affiliation. By tabulating these attributes against party affiliation, relationships were discovered which indicate that religious and …

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg Jul 1964

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg

Graduate Student Research Papers

With all of this apparent concern by the Big Three regarding Poland, why has there been so much criticism of the Polish settlement at Yalta? Did Roosevelt and Churchill actually appease Stalin in regard to the Polish settlement? What was this settlement at Yalta--an act of betrayal or an act of realism? This is the confusing question that the writer of this paper will attempt to answer.

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle Feb 1964

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle

Latin American Studies ETDs

This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist "takeover" of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

The entire process of the 1933 Cuban revolution calls for an …

English Franchise Reform In The Seventeenth Century, Richard Bushman Nov 1963

English Franchise Reform In The Seventeenth Century, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The roots of franchise reform in the seventeenth century are of interest to historians both of Britain and of America. In the new world and in England important steps toward democratic suffrage were taken in the first half of the century. The Virginia charter of 1619 granted voting privileges to all adult male inhabitants regardless of property. Later governments qualified this liberality, but an important precedent was established. In England Leveller tracts and the classic Putney Debates aired arguments that bore no immediate practical fruits but that foreshadowed later reforms. 130th developments are startling enough to raise urgent questions about …

The Origins Of Thomas Jefferson's Anti-Clericalism, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1963

The Origins Of Thomas Jefferson's Anti-Clericalism, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Cannibals - mountebanks - charlatans - pious and whining hypocrites - necromancers - pseudo-Christians - mystery mongers. These are among the epithets which Thomas Jefferson applied to the clergy of the Protestant denominations and of the Roman Catholic Church as well. It was they who "perverted" the principles of Jesus "into an engine for enslaving mankind"; it was the Christian "priesthood" who had turned organized religion into a "mere contrivance to filch wealth and power" for themselves; they were the ones who throughout history had persecuted rational men for refusing to swallow "their impious heresies." This attitude of Jefferson, with …

New Mexico's Troubled Years, Calvin Horn Jan 1963

New Mexico's Troubled Years, Calvin Horn

UNM Historical Documents

Foreword

The history of New Mexico is a distillation of the American experience. It provides striking evidence of the truth of Walt Whitman's dictum: "Here is not merely a nation but a teeming Nation of nations." For New Mexico offers a compact illustration of the way a diversity of races and cultures pooled their traditions and skills to build an American state—and, in doing so, displayed impressive qualities of courage and resourcefulness.

New Mexico's history goes back many centuries to the time when the Pueblo Indians, confronted by drought, disease and hostile tribes, developed a civilization only a little less …

The Kingdom Of God In Mormon Thought And Practice, 1830-1896, Klaus J. Hansen Jan 1963

The Kingdom Of God In Mormon Thought And Practice, 1830-1896, Klaus J. Hansen

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the spring of 1844 the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith organized a secret organization called the Council of Fifty as the governing body of a political kingdom of God which ultimately was to rule the world. The idea of the political kingdom of God and attempts of the Council of Fifty to transform this idea into reality through the creation of a temporal Mormon state provide the central theme of Mormon history during the major part of the nineteenth century. It is therefore one of the more puzzling phenomena of historiography that these aspects of Mormon history have escaped almost …

The Attitude Of Indiana's Congressional Delegation During The Civil War Toward Slavery And The Negro: 1861-1865, Emma T. Randall

In this thesis I have examined the attitudes on the Negro question of the members if the Indiana delegation to the Congress of the United States during the period 1861-1865. Two Congresses were is session during this period--the Thirty-seventh and the Thirty-eighth. The Globe and newspapers of the period have been my two primary sources of information. Every shade of opinion was expressed ranging from the utterances of so-called Abolitionist Republican George W. Julian, to the ultra-conservative sentiments voiced by Daniel Voorhees, Democrat.
