Ron Daniels: Profile Of A Presidential Candidate, Harold Horton Sep 1992

Ron Daniels: Profile Of A Presidential Candidate, Harold Horton

Trotter Review

The mass media has said very little about it, but Ron Daniels, an African American, is a presidential candidate. In 1988, Daniels was the southern regional coordinator and deputy campaign manager for Jesse Jackson's campaign. Daniels, a veteran social and political activist as well as former director of the National Rainbow Coalition, declared his candidacy for president at a news conference October 14, 1991.

From 1974 to 1980, Daniels served as president of the National Black Political Assembly and in 1980, he was the chairperson of the founding convention of the National Black Independent Political Party. Daniels was the convener …

The Federalist Revolt: An Affirmation Or Denial Of Popular Sovereignty?, Paul R, Hanson Sep 1992

The Federalist Revolt: An Affirmation Or Denial Of Popular Sovereignty?, Paul R, Hanson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

After nearly two centuries of relative neglect by historians, the Federalist revolt of 1793 finally is receiving the attention it deserves. Book-length studies now exist for each of the main Federalist cities, and several articles have considered various aspects of either Federalism or the Federalist revolt.1 We are thus in a position to begin a fuller and more informed evaluation of the character and significance of the Federalist revolt...

President Reagan's Rhetorical War Against Nicaraugua, 1981-1987, Donald Morton Jul 1992

President Reagan's Rhetorical War Against Nicaraugua, 1981-1987, Donald Morton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Reagan administration launched a two term campaign to win support for the Contra rebels fighting Nicaragua. The rhetorical war began in secrecy and ended in scandal. With Reagan's reputation as a "great communicator" and the priority he assigned to the Contra cause it seemed surprising to find virtually nothing on the topic in a search of the communication journals through mid 1992.

The central research question of this thesis is whether President Reagan used rhetorical strategies and similar depictions to other presidents in his prowar rhetoric against Nicaragua. A common theme of war rhetoric is the dehumanizing of the …

The New York-New Jersey Boundary Controversy: John Marshall And The Nullification Crisis, Michael J. Birkner Jul 1992

The New York-New Jersey Boundary Controversy: John Marshall And The Nullification Crisis, Michael J. Birkner

History Faculty Publications

In 1832 a long-standing boundary dispute between New York and New Jersey complicated the work of Chief Justice John Marshall and President Andrew Jackson. Long reviled by southern states' rights advocates, including the president, Marshall in 1832 faced the prospect of having the Court's decisions ignored by the state of Georgia. Federal authority was further challenged in the fall of 1832, when South Carolina nullified the tariff of 1828, thereby provoking a constitutional crisis. On December 10, 1832, to the amazement of many observers, Jackson issued a proclamation rejecting nullification and secession, and threatening military action if South Carolina did …

The Defenders Of State Sovereignty And Individual Liberties, 1954 - 1967, David Pembroke Neff Jul 1992

The Defenders Of State Sovereignty And Individual Liberties, 1954 - 1967, David Pembroke Neff

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the Defenders of State Sovereignty and Individual Liberties from 1954 to 1967. By 1956, the Defenders were the most powerful segregationist organization in the state of Virginia. Dedicated to preserving segregation in Virginia, especially in regards to the state's public schools, the Defenders greatly influenced the Byrd Organization and the Virginia General Assembly on massive resistance legislation from 1954 until 1959. Some historians have suggested that the Defenders had "Complete and full control of the Political Machinery of the state" in regards to massive resistance. This thesis uses a variety of sources to provide an analytical overview …

"Ambition Has Always Been My God": William Winlock Miller And Opportunity In Washington Territory, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

In October 1875, when he was at the acme of his success as a pioneer Olympia businessman, William Winlock Miller offered some fatherly advice to an elder sister's son who had recently emigrated from Illinois:

If your object in corning hither was to get employment as a clerk it was injudicious-we only want men here who have muscle and are willing to labor. But now that you are here I would make the best of it. ... Avoid saloons and all places of vice. Don't drink, chew, or swear. Start at the foot of the ladder. Practice economy. Every young …

Francis Gildart Ruffin: A Jeffersonian Agrarian In The Old South And New Virginia, 1816 - 1892, R. Allen Brahin Jul 1992

Francis Gildart Ruffin: A Jeffersonian Agrarian In The Old South And New Virginia, 1816 - 1892, R. Allen Brahin

History Theses & Dissertations

For over forty years, Francis "Frank" Gildart Ruffin derived his livelihood from slave labor and agricultural pursuits. Like Jefferson, Ruffin believed that the nation should be based on the industry of small farmers. Once the Civil War began, he served the Confederacy on the staff of the Commissary Department. Following the war, Ruffin actively engaged in politics in the Old Dominion, though he never sought office. He became associated with the "Readjuster" party in Virginia. Its goal was to readjust or reduce the state's debt, which was to be particularly beneficial to farmers. Ruffin was an original Readjuster, but later …

"Working The Political Engine": Sam Adams And The Spread Of Revolution In Provincial Massachusetts, Kirk G. Bast Apr 1992

"Working The Political Engine": Sam Adams And The Spread Of Revolution In Provincial Massachusetts, Kirk G. Bast

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Since the Revolutionary crisis with Britain began, people have debated Samuel Adam’s role in America’s break from the Empire. Currently, scholars are particularly interested in Adams ’ influence over both the people of Boston and other inhabitants of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as they resisted British regulations. Was he able to manipulate crowd and mob behavior to enhance provincial fervor? Key to understanding Adams' influence is his conversion of rural Massachusetts to revolutionary sentiment. The purpose of this project is to assess Adam’s impact as a propagandist from the mid-1760s to the early 1770s.

Many Voices, Similar Concerns: Traditional Methods Of African-American Political Activity In Norfolk, Virginia, 1865-1875, Michael Hucles Jan 1992

Many Voices, Similar Concerns: Traditional Methods Of African-American Political Activity In Norfolk, Virginia, 1865-1875, Michael Hucles

History Faculty Publications

African-Americans in postbellum Norfolk, Virginia, as elsewhere, knew that merely gaining freedom through government action--the Confiscation Acts, Emancipation Proclamation, and Thirteenth Amendment--did not guarantee that they would be fairly treated. They therefore attempted to gain control of their lives through a vigorous affirmation of their rights. They began to record their antebellum marriages and normalize family relations, obtain an education, establish a base for economic prosperity, and participate in the political process. Through these actions they hoped to give true meaning to their freedom. Unfortunately, they were not always successful in their attempts.
