In the sprint of 1948, President Harry S. Truman's chances of being re-elected to the presidency of the United States seemed very dubious. It was uncertain that he would even secure the Democratic nomination for that office.

Truman's pre-convention Western trip. In the early summer of 1948 President Truman left the Capitol on a supposedly non-political Western trip. Although his aids insisted the journey was to be non-political, the fiction deceived no one. Following his election to the office of President of the United States, in 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt began his attempt to overcome the economic difficulties caused by the depression of 1929. His program for recovery included the enactment by Congress of many new pieces of legistlation. A great amount of this legislation was ruled out by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional. Subsequently, the President on February 5, 1937, presented a proposal to alter the court system of the United States. This proposal brought forth a surge of public opinion throughout the nation. This study proposes to analyze the qualities of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's speeches as determined through a general survey of his speeches and a particular study of those of 1941.

As President Roosevelt is considered an effective speaker of the day, a consideration of those qualities of composition, delivery and audience reaction which have contributed to the effectiveness of his speeches should have value. The year 1941 was selected because it was decisive year in the destiny of our country and as such affected his speeches.

In a study of New Mexico's efforts to win statehood, the joint statehood period (1903 to 1907) presents unusual interest. This thesis will examine the personality and policy of Albert J. Beveridge, of Indiana, in his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Territories from 1901 to 1911. Particular emphasis is placed upon his attitude toward the admission into the Union of three territories, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma. This, therefore, is an effort to disclose the motives, methods, and theories which determined and characterized Beveridge's statehood policy.

The Mexican War was not waged for the purpose of acquiring Texas by force since Texas had become a part of the United States after having won her independence. The Mexican war was fought for this reason and not for that so often given that the United States instigated it because of a lust for additional territory. Mexico, thought refusing to recognize this independence, accepted the inevitable, but did not consider the strip of land between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers as Texas territory.

We choose Italy for our study, because she is the mother of this phenomenon -- Fascism having originated in Italy -- and because Fascism received its name by and from that country. Wherever necessary, we will, for the purpose of elucidation, make allusions to and draw comparisons with the forms of Fascism existing in other countries. The purpose of this paper, then, is to make a searching inquiry into the institutions of the Italy of today as compared with the pre-Fascist Italy, so that we will be enabled to determine the true nature of Fascism.
